Martinu composed the one-act operaArianeover the course of a single month, in June 1958. He prepared the libretto himself according to his friend Georges Neveux's playThe Voyage of Theseus(1943). Most of the text was taken from the second and third act, besides Ariane's lamentation at the beginning of the fourth act, which he adapted as a grand coloratura aria within the opera's finale.Soon after its completion, in summer 1958, and hoping for a world premiere at Milan's La Scala, Martinu entered the opera into a composer's competition organised by the Italian publishing house Ricordi to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding. When the contest was called off, Martinu offered the work to Barenreiter in spring 1959. Both the full score and the vocal score (arranged by the composer) were published posthumously in 1960. The premiere took place at the municipal theatre in Gelsenkirchen in 1961.The main source of this scholarly-critical edition is the autograph score, while the vocal parts are also based on the autograph vocal score as a referential source. The Appendix offers the original beginning of the work with an entirely different orchestration, which is also reproduced as a facsimile.

Composed in 1956 by Bohuslav Martinu, the Sonatina for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a neo-classical piece. This work, to be played as a single movement has been written in three different sections: Moderato, Andante and Poco Allegro. The rhythms are reminiscent of a polka and a march and the piece contains unexpected syncopation. Being one of Bohuslav Martinu's later works, it was written in New York, after he spent some time in Paris. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different styles, including romanticism, jazz and expressionism, he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces, including 16 symphonies, 14 ballets and 15 operas.

“Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy neoclassicism, surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied, substantial work for the Cello repertoire, Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.â€.

Bohuslav Martinu wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932-33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during the composer's lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller, contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk, who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. The solo part has been revised by a leading Czech violinist and performer of Martinu's music.* Major violin concerto of the 20th century* New Foreword by Martinu scholar Sandra Bergmannova (Cz/Eng/Ger)

“Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France, where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied, substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire, Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.&rdquo.
