Kyle Johnson has taken the traditional canon “When Jesus Wept†and creatively deconstructed it. We never hear more than two parts in canon with each other at the same time. Then he introduces a new counter-melody in the other parts and fills out the harmonies in other ways. While the words can be lost in the traditional four-part canon, the overall effect of Johnson’s approach is to create a moving meditation on the text. Easily accessible and highly recommended for small SATB choirs, but any size group will appreciate the artistry of this piece.

Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score available separately - see item CA.5031400.

This animated setting of the traditional Easter carol can be performed with piano or organ. It features a sprightly accompaniment and easy but varied choral writing (sometimes in canon, sometimes in augmentation, a fair amount of unison, some four-part). We think your choir will enjoy this! Duration: 3:00.

Written in memory of a loved one, this piece celebrates a love of life and a love of music. Sections of text are taken from the traditional hymn How Can I Keep from Singing and the use of Pachelbel's Canon in D as an overlay reflect the universal nature of music and its connection to the human spirit.

Early Christmas/Epiphany text with traditional English tune, TRUTH FROM ABOVE. Chant-like melodies of stanza 1 evolve into short canon. Contrasting sections in major reflect texts of stanzas 2 and 4, stanza 3 has exotic Eastern flavor, all culminating in transcendent ending. Occasional mild dissonances approached with easy voice-leading. Changing meters flow naturally from text and tune.

Canon Michael McCarthy, Director of Music at the National Cathedral, has written original music to the traditional text which begins May the road rise to meet you…. A brief tenor solo begins the piece, which has a lovely melody and an undulating organ accompaniment. The choir ends the setting with an elaboration of the material which the soloist sang at the beginning. Duration 3:00.
