This Tristan will be something formidable! This last act!I fear the opera will be banned - if the whole work is not parodied through bad performance: only mediocre performances can save me! Thoroughly good ones will surely drive people crazy.Richard WagnerWhile working on the score toTristan und Isolde, Richard Wagner expressed his excitement and elation about his new musical drama. Indeed, the radical originality of the work proved to be both unique and forward-looking: Over 150 years ago it signified thedawnof the modern era and to this day it has not lost any of its fascination. Throughout his life, Richard Wagner was proud of his even handwriting. He constantly strove to produce manuscripts of a high calligraphic standard. The Tristan manuscript is also clearly written. More so than in his other scores however, traces of his working process are evident. It is precisely this aspect of the autograph that makes it fascinating. Reading it, one is witness to Wagner's highlyconcentrated, powerful and relentless writing. This manuscript is in every possible way unparalleled reflecting individuality and uniqueness. In time for the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth in 2013, this great work is published as a BARENREITER FACSIMILE in cooperation with the National Archive of the Richard-Wagner-Stiftung Bayreuth. In addition to the complete score, the edition includes the autograph concert ending of the Vorspiel as well as three pages that Wagner rejected while composing and later used for sketches.Ulrich Konrad, the renowned musicologist describes the genesis and performance history of the work in his comprehensive commentary. He also details the physical appearance and condition of the autograph as well as giving an insight into the musical language of Wagner.German Music Edition PrizeBest Edition2013

Now they began to play. To my greatest surprise, it was a strong, full orchestra, outstandingly rehearsed, the tempi nearly all perfect, everything neat and well executed. My God, how I was moved to hear basically for the first time something of mine being played without me, and without anyone really paying much attention to me. And now this very piece, the Tannhauser Overture! I sat there plagued by an indescribable inner agitation - : unfortunately, I was being sharply observed by the public, which had taken note of this; yet I noticed nothing of all this, and burst into a river of beneficial tears. (...) At the close, the wild applause of the public that had no idea about what they had just witnessed The conductor and the entire orchestra turned towards me and cheered and applauded so much that I had to stand and thank them...(Richard Wagner from Strasbourg to his wife Minna on 15 January 1858).

DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN), WWV 63, had two sources of inspiration for Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The first was a short story by Heinrich Heine, based on the folk legend of a sea-captain doomed to roam the seas for eternity. The second was an 1839 voyage that Wagner took on board the Thetis, a Norwegian ship, from Riga to London. The first performance took place at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden on January 2, 1843, under the baton of the composer. Expecting more of the pageantry and conflagration of RIENZI, the first Dresden audience reacted with indifference. The production lasted only four performances. In the 1870s, as listeners grew used to the innovations of his mature works, it finally grew in popularity and has become one of his most-performed operas today. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2(2nd dEH).2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp:Perc(1): Hp: Str(4.4.3.3.3 in set): Vocal soli (6 roles, SATTBB): Chorus: Banda (3Picc.6Hn.2Perc).
