Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

Aspirations is written for the youngest and least experienced of musicians, who have only had a short time on their instruments. This piece uses minimal material, including no more than two repeated eighth notes as the most difficult rhythm. It contains bold fanfare gestures, marcato melodic material, and a contrasting legato theme. Every section of the ensemble is featured in this surprisingly sophisticated, yet very attainable piece.

Conversational Solfege is a curriculum for developing music literacy skills. It is organized around increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic content. Each new rhythmic or melodic element is discovered first in patterns and then reinforced with folk songs, rhymes, and classical examples. This CD provides 29 classical selections referenced in Conversational Solfege Level 3. These examples provide reinforcement for emerging literacy skills, and they also enable students to listen to wonderful classical examples with greater attention. Listening to classical music can be challenging for elementary students. With nothing to hang onto, the many notes can be too much to comprehend and attention soon wanes. But with minimal literacy skills, students will have enough musical information to discover that classical music can be accessible and appealing. In the booklet, timings are given for each selection. The portions of the music that are readable by the students are reproduced. Whether using this CD with Conversational Solfege instructional materials or simply as a resource of classical music with simple-to-read rhythmic and melodic material, both teachers and students will delight in discovering this wonderful music through literacy.  CONTENTS Conversational Solfege Unit 14: 1. Abrahamsen's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra was composed in 1999, by commission for the BIT-20 Ensemble. A complex and multi-layered work, opening with highly minimal material and very slowly building to an ecstatic frenzy across the four movements. As the piece progresses Abrahamsen has also included some significant nods towards composers Gyorgy Ligeti (a former teacher of the composer) and Gustav Mahler. The work was premiered at the Ultima Festival in Oslo in 2000 with Anne Marie Abildskov as soloist.

String Quartet (1985) - In memoriam Urmas Kibuspuu. This impressive two-movement string quartet by the popular young Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur (b. 1959) displays minimalist influences. The most pronounced ostinato tendencies are in the first violin, which repeats the same motif for several bars while the other instruments accompany it with their own recurring motifs. Released on the BIS label, the quartet is dedicated to the memory of a friend of Tuur's, the Estonian actor Urmas Kibuspuu.

Symphony No.5 (Childhood) marks somewhat of an evolution in Ritchie's writing, as he further embraces the minimalist techniques that have influenced his previous work. Beautiful, expressive solo passages emerge, particularly for oboe, while elsewhere the orchestra becomes swirling and thunderous as if mimicking the chaotic action of a packed playground, creating an affecting portrait of this magical first stage of life.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna.

Dating from the 18th century, He Is Born, Holy Child is a traditional French carol. The composer and lyricist are anonymous, but translations of the texts have resulted in many references to music, including Sound the pipes, let the trumpets play, Play the oboes and bagpipes merrily, and Bells are ringing, we are singing. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar) strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material. All dynamics and articulations, minimally marked, should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

Inspired by so-called minimalist ostinato music thriving on fast textures with slow, luscious harmony, Dorff found this an enticing approach to composing for marimbas. The work was simultaneously premiered in late 1985 by Nachiko Maekane on the East Coast, and by Brian Prechtl and Hitoshi Maeda on the West Coast. Each dance etude has a characteristic interval and ostinato rhythm, and may be performed by any number of players.
