Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, often referred to as the first composition of the modern era, is one of Debussy's most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources, and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Baerenreiter's new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which, however, contains many engraver errors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration, countless discrepancies are revealed.

Hardcover full score. Text in Polish, German, and English. This edition of the works of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz is based on critically examined sources. It includes all his compositions. The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.

Prelude to the Tempest Op.109 No.1 comes from an hour-long score of incidental music for orchestra by Danish composer, Jean Sibelius. In 1925 Sibelius was commissioned by the Danish Royal Theatre to create incidental music for Shakespeare's The Tempest. The resulting 34 miniatures represent Sibelius at his most modernistic and it is both rousing and powerful yet elsewhere light, gentle and airy, fully reflecting the breadth and depth of Shakespeare's characters.

Debussy decided in 1892, at the age of thirty, to compose a work for orchestra after Mallarmé's poem, L'aprés-midi d'un faune. Originally he had thought of writing three movements (Prélude - Interlude - Paraphrase) but when the first movement was completed in September 1894 he came to the conclusion that the continuation would be superfluous. The Prélude was first performed in Paris with Gustave Doret as conductor on 22 December of the same year yet, as it achieved immediate succes it had to be repeated. Source for the present edition was the first printed score (1895) which had been revised by the composer. Debussy's original, French expressions and markings have been retained.

Miniature Suite was written for David Munrow in 1969, receiving its first performance with harpsichordist Christopher Hogwood in London's Purcell Room that year. The material of each of its five movements is drawn from the recorder's solo introduction. Following the enthusiasm of recorder virtuosi John Turner it was revised in 2011, and the revised version was first performed by John Turner and Ian Thompson in Casterton Church on April 3rd 2011. The works has been recorded by the same artists for the Prima Facie label (Recorder Fireworks PFCD0010).David Lord was born in Oxford in 1944 and studied under Richard Rodney Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music. As a young composer he received many commissions, including works for Julian Bream, Janet Baker, George Malcolm, Imogen Holst, the London Symphony and Northern Sinfonia Orchestras and the Bath, Cheltenham and Aldeburgh Festivals. More recent years have seen him active as a record producer (XTC, Peter Gabriel, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Korgis, Tears for Fears, Jean Michel Jarre) and writer/arranger for film and TV (Cracker, Inspector Rebus etc).
