Deze rolverdelingwordt echter regelmatig doorbroken door het orkest ook alleen te laten spelen of in dialoog met de solist.Canzona per Organo e Orchestra a Fiato is een driedelig werk in de klassieke opeenvolging snel-langzaam-snel.Het langzame deel is een reeks variaties op het beroemde thema uit de Barok-tijd: 'La Folia' (van onbekende herkomst) dat diverse componisten heeft geinspireerd tot het schrijven van variaties. Verder spreekt deze compositie voorzichzelf. Het is een speel- en luisterstuk met als enige pretentie dat het met plezier gespeeld en beluisterd wordt.

In January 1964 Bernd Alois Zimmermann interrupted the completion of his opera Die Soldaten [The Soldiers] in order to rearrange his orchestral work Dialoge for two pianos.
