A stunning and heart-wrenching composition based on the Jewish folk son Shlof, Mayn Kind. You can hear the emotional content pour out of this piece written in memory of an outstanding orchestra director. The piece beginnings with original material to set the tone, followed by a clarinet solo on the song. It then develops through a variety of different harmonic presentation before building to a nice key change and climatic moment. The piece ends as it began, but with a more hopeful tone. An amazing piece.Sleep, My Child was commissioned by the Madison Middle School Band and Orchestra in Tampa, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Orchestras Kevin Frye. Director of Bands Chris Shultz championed the commissioning of this piece to honor Kevin after he passed away in December 2016. Mr. Frye was a beloved member of the staff at Madison Middle as well as the music community of Tampa and the state of Florida. I was a personal friend of Kevin’s. We were in several musical groups together when we were young that were formative to both of our musical careers. I also guest conducted his Madison Middle School Orchestra several times over the past four years. His musicianship, teaching skills and love for his students were exemplary. When taking on the challenge of writing a piece to honor Kevin’s legacy, Mr. Shultz and I decided to try and include several important aspects of Kevin’s life into the piece. Kevin was proudly Jewish, a fantastic trumpet player and loved Jazz. With that in mind, and after a lot of research, a Jewish folk song Shlof, Mayn Kind was selected as the basis for the piece, not to be religious, but to honor his faith and heritage. Plus it is a beautiful song, and I felt the title reflected the sentiment I was looking to express, which is of someone taking rest after a long battle with illness. Thus, a lullaby seemed appropriate.I also wanted to incorporate Jazz into the piece, but in a concert setting, so you will hear as the piece develops, the harmonies of the folk song expand into ones found more commonly in Jazz compositions. Not in a far out way, but in a subtle way to again honor this part of his life. For example the climactic moment of the piece at the fermata in m. 57 is a Dbmaj9#11 chord. It appropriately give the piece the angst that I was looking for at this moment in the piece, while honoring the importance of Jazz in Kevin’s musical life. The piece was also conceived to include both the Madison band and orchestra in the performance at the premiere. I wanted the pieces to work separately by the band and separately by the orchestra, but I also wanted them to be able to play the piece together to honor Kevin. The piece begins with original material designed to set the mood of the piece with a tempo/style marking of pensive, but also as material that I used as connective musical tissue between statements of the folk song. After this introduction, the folk song is presented by a solo violin (or clarinet) with orchestral accompaniment in a simple straight forward presentation of the song. This is followed by a woodwind section statement of the folk song accompanied by muted trumpets. During this presentation the harmony starts to expand with more color notes in the chords. The low brass are added half way through this statement to add depth and lushness. The introductory material returns, but with some angry hits in the lower voices. This leads to a full ensemble state of new material that is used to transition to the climax of the piece, and to build tension. After the build, the piece modulates to a shortened statement of the folk song with more advanced harmonies and an active counter line in the violas, horns, saxes and first clarinets to further build the tension. This tension is released at the fermata in m. 57, as mentioned above. After a thoughtful pause, the piece concludes with a completion of the folk song again with a solo violin (or clarinet) followed by a return of the introductory material to tie the piece together. The piece ends hopeful, with a solo trumpet (Kevin’s instrument) that is dissonant at first, but then resolves as if to say - everything will be OK! It has been my distinct honor to have been asked to write this piece in Kevin’s memory! I hope that in some small way the piece helps to bring comfort to his family, students, colleagues and to all those that knew him!–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017.

Dove Award winning songwriters Joel Lindsey and Jeff Bumgardner, with Dove Award winning arranger/ orchestrator Daniel Semsen, have, once again, brought to life an astoundingly appealing new musical for Christmas, Love Was Born a King. With a slew of critically acclaimed dramatic musicals for Christmas under their belt, this highly awarded creative team has done it again, this time with a twist! Their newest offering, Love Was Born a King, is actually 2 musicals in one! Fully developed as a dramatic musical in the vein of their previous successes (How to Have the Best Christmas Ever, An Unexpected Christmas, Welcome to Bethlehem, Under a Starry Sky), Love Was Born a King certainly doesn’t disappoint those in search of their next, new, dramatic musical. For others, who love the music heard in those previously released musicals but aren’t looking for a dramatic musical, Joel and Jeff have delivered an amazing choir with narrator musical option that fully utilizes all the songs found in the drama version… literally, 2 musicals in 1! The option with drama deals poignantly and sensitively with the plight of the homeless, drawing on the responsibility of God’s people to minister and care for those in need. And in the course of helping others, finding that we just might find ourselves being ministered to in the process! If instead you’re looking for a choir with narrator option, you’ll discover the same brilliantly written songs wrapped in a beautifully expressed narrative highlighting the traditional Christmas story focusing on the power and beauty of God’s Love come down to earth, manifested in the birth of the Christ Child.

Sarah Baker is Vocal Composer in Residence at Education Music Services, an ABRSM examiner and a well known composer of songs and musicals for primary schools and massed-choral events. All this experience has come together in the creation of this album of piano pieces, inspired by growing up in the Chiltern Hills. Suitable for players of around grade 4-5 standard, her evocative sound pieces describe a crash-landing hot air balloon, garden invading cows and a even a snake in a pond!Air Balloon!: One vivid memory I have as a child is of the day that a hot air balloon passed over our house and made an emergency landing on the road in front! The sound of the gas being blown into the balloon to try to keep it high enough to pass the house sounded so loud and intimidating, and then there was the bustle of the neighbours as we all went out into the street to watch. It was both terrifying and exhilarating to watch the balloon float past and then land so near by.Buzzards Circling: There is something so calming and restful about watching birds of prey circling in the thermal currents of a summer sky. Growing up in the Chilterns gave me plenty of opportunity to watch buzzards and red kites. This piano solo captures the beauty of their flight as they glide so effortlessly through the air. There’s A Cow In The Garden Eating The Flowers: Inspired by the memory of seeing an unexpected cow in the garden! This surreal image is captured in a quirky waltz, as I portray both the absurdity of the moment and the sense of wonder I felt as a child, looking out of the window and seeing the cow walking round and eating the flowers. The final phrase articulates my longing: ‘I wish it would come again’.Watching The World Go By: A short, reflective piece, remembering what it was like to have time to just sit and watch the world go by from my bedroom window.Autumn Skies: A miniature about the beauty of Autumn skies and the poignant sense of loss for a summer gone. Friends I was fortunate to have several children of my own age living close by. We seemed to be forever making dens, playing out in the street and generally enjoying each other’s company. This piece reflects that sense of well-being.Snake In The Pond: One hot summer I was astonished and scared to see a grass snake cooling off in our garden pond! I watched, both horrified and fascinated, as it rose up from the depths and then disappeared again. Here I portray the sense of the hazy summer afternoon as I peacefully watched the tiny movements of fish in the pond, contrasted with the fear and excitement of seeing the snake appear.Morning Commute: I recollect many mornings stuck in traffic as my Dad took me to school on his way to work. There is one main road out of the village where I grew up, and that got more and more congested the closer we got to the town. We may not have chatted a lot, but it was always good to be together with my Dad, lost in our own thoughts. The Witch’s Cottage: My siblings and I had a fascination with a small cottage nearby. It was set back from the road in a dark part of the woods and we called it 'the witch's cottage’. Every time we passed, I imagined I heard the distant cackle of the witch and wished I could catch a glimpse of her. These pieces are written to complement my other collection, Night Time Impressions, which also draw on childhood recollections, particularly of the woods behind the house where I grew up. - Sarah Baker 2023.

This 'Musical Garden for Babies' extends an invitation to babies of up to 18 months and their parents to join in a musical game. Making music together at this early stage provides the child with nourishment in three respects: for body, soul and brain. Through songs, rhymes and movement games children and those closest to them can enjoy discovering their own voices and bodies. Simple instruments such as wood blocks, rattles and drums lead the child into the world of sounds. Research has confirmed the positive influence of musical activity on the overall development of the child - in its musical ability, its social relationships and its intelligence. A lesson in the 'Musical Garden for Babies' is structured around the following activities: greeting and farewell songs - rhymes and games for bouncing baby on your knee - finger games and songs to develop awareness of the body - rocking songs and lullabies - songs for dancing and moving about to - echo games - introducing simple instruments - playing with pieces of cloth - listening to music. The teacher's book contains information on infant development, explanations of the principles behind teaching and plenty of ideas for lessons. The song books with CD make it possible to take the 'sound environment' of the music lesson home with you and to keep singing and enjoying the songs with the family.

Ming Wang's A Child's Universe is a strikingly novel and versatile set of ensemble pieces intended to introduce young instrumentalists of beginner-intermediate level to the world of contemporary music. Immediately accessible in style, attractive, tuneful and rhythmically uncomplicated, the twelve pieces are divided into four groups -- one each for winds, guitars, and strings, all with percussion ad lib., together with a final group for all the instruments combined. Though each group is conceived as a unity, the pieces can be played in any order, or even performed individually. The number of musicians playing each instrumental line can vary, provided that a suitable balance within the ensemble is maintained. If a particular instrument is unavailable, another of similar compass and timbre may be substituted (versions of the parts in C are provided where a non transposing instrument is used). Included with the score is a CD containing the parts (PDF format), which may be printed out as necessary. Imbued with a playful and childlike spirit, A Child's Universe is an exciting new addition to the contemporary musical repertoire for young players.

In Little Seeds you will find new hymns from my heart. My devotional life is given to you in my hymnwriting. During the past three years I have been writing songs for the unity of the church - songs reminding us of our baptism. I have been writing biblical story hymns for lesser-known characters. I have written paperless songs that may be easily memorized. I set a Rumi poem. There are new hymns for Christian missions from everywhere to everywhere. You will find new texts and musical settings for folk songs from around the world. I hope I have treated these with the love and respect they deserve. You will find alternate arrangements of some songs that may be useful in different settings. Lim Swee Hong composed three tunes for this collection at my request. I am also pleased to include Lianne Tan's first published hymn tune in Little Seeds.
