HN 1215 · ISMN M-2018-1215-1 When his contemporaries heard the works that Johannes Brahms had composed during his summer holiday in Ischl in 1893 – the Piano Pieces op. 118 –, they were delighted. Clara Schumann was one of the first to be allowed to get to know the new pieces, and she attested that they contained “a wealth of sentiment in the smallest of dimensions”. Philipp Spitta fittingly said that the works were “perfect for slowly absorbing in solitude and tranquillity”. The composer and pedagogue Adolph von Henselt (1814?1889) can truly be considered one of the founding fathers of the Russian School of piano playing. He counted among his pupils Nicolai Sergeyvich Zverev, the teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Rachmaninoff considered Henselt?s Etudes the equal of those by Liszt and Chopin for their great beauty. Henselt?s music was well-known in his time, and in the repertoire of the greatest virtuosos of the 19th century, including Clara Schumann (who premiered his F minor Concerto with Mendelssohn conducting), Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow, Vladimir de Pachmann and Alexander Scriabin. The two sets of Etudes Opp. 2 and 5 were composed just before Henselt moved permanently to Russia and each set was originally published as two books of six études. This new Edition Peters Urtext edition collects each set in its own volume, together with, in volume 1, a selection of Henselt?s Exercices préparatoires and, in volume 2, two additional etudes. It is edited by Daniel Grimwood, one of the composer?s most highly regarded interpreters, whose recording of the complete Etudes is available from Edition Peters Sounds. This is the only available modern Urtext edition of these important piano works. / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Etude / Piano

The source consists of a one-page autograph of this literal ?Albumblatt? (untitled by Brahms). Three Intermezzi op. 117-The three popular Intermezzi Op. 117 can be seen as the epitome of Brahms? late work for Piano. Clara Schumann confessed: ?In these pieces I at last feel musical life stir once again inmy soul?. Brahms reacted as he often did in a rather brusque manner. Although he sometimes described the three Intermezzi as being ?Wiegenlieder? (lullabies) he formally rejected this title: ?It should thensay lullaby of an unhappy mother or of a disconsolate bachelor.? The new edition of these moderately difficult Intermezzi has now been revised following the musical text of the Brahms Complete Edition and hasfingerings by Andreas Boyde.

Piano

Revised edition of HN 120-Johannes Brahms presumably wrote the Fantasies op. 116 at the same time as the Intermezzi op. 117 in the summer of 1892 in Bad Ischl. His sojourn in the Salzkammergut obviously inspired Brahms to write music for solo piano asa year later he worked on other cycles when he was there. Amongst these late melancholy piano pieces op. 116 is in particular characterised by opposites. Four “dreamy” – according to Clara Schumann –intermezzi are juxtaposed with three “deeply passionate” capricci. Seven pieces in true Brahms’ style which are also accessible to non-virtuosos due to their medium level of difficulty. Our revision contains themusical text of the new Brahms Complete Edition.

No. 2 In G Major Op. 36.

The tradition of piano duet recitals began during the eighteenth century. It was highlighted in concerts throughout Europe by Mozart and his sister Nannerl. Most of the great composers of the Classic and Romantic eras contributedto the four-hand repertoire. In the nineteenth century when the vogue of this particularly intimate art reached its peak such musicians as Schubert Mendelssohn Brahms and Clara Schumann were outstanding participants bothas composers and performers. Piano duet recitals were heard less often during the first half of this century but in recent years there has been a strong revival of interest in four-hand performances.

Johannes Brahms?s Piano Sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the 20-year-old composer published. They were composed in 1852/53 although the Sonata in f-sharp minor was apparently the first of the three to becomposed as it was finished by November 1852. This work has a special place in his oeuvre. Besides its passionate atmosphere his contemporaries discerned it to be ?serious and dignified in character?. Brahms dedicated thissonata to Clara Schumann whose husband Robert wrote to the composer that ?Your second sonata my friend has brought me much closer to you?. The ingenious fingerings have been provided by the pianist Andreas Boyde a recognisedBrahms expert.

Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The Piano Pieces Op. 119 are less a loose collection of pieces than a self-contained cycle. Johannes Brahms's piano work reach their conclusion and fulfilment in these pieces, and the forebodings of death in the E-flat minor Intermezzo Op. 118 #6 are metamorphosed into late-Romantic otherworldliness.
Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann about the Intermezzo Op. 119 #1: 'I am tempted to copy out a little piano piece for you, since I would like to know how you find it. It is full of dissonances! They may be correct and legitimate - but perhaps not to your liking, in which case I wish they were less correct but more appealing and to your taste. The little piece is exceptionally melancholic, and it would be an understatement to say that it must 'be played very slowly'. Every bar and eyery note must sound ritard., as if one wanted to squeeze the melancholy with ecstasy and contentment out of every single one of those dissonances! Oh God, the description alone will make you eager!'
Ulrich Mahlert has revised this edition of the 'Klavierstücke' Op. 119 on the basis of the author's copy of the composer, and wrote a detailed and informative preface to the new edition./ Répertoire / Piano
