The De Haske String Orchestra Series offers attractive pieces especially composed and arranged for string orchestras. Students and teachers are treated to a great variety of musical styles. Each part presents a challenge to the player. The Viola part can be replaced by a 3rd Violin part, and the Double bass part can be replaced by a 2nd Cello part. The Piano part is mainly meant for support, but it occasionally adds new motifs as well.

12th Street Blues is a fun piece that introduces the young orchestra to the basics of blues in an accessible and enjoyable way. Teaching opportunities include triplets, staccato articulations, dynamic changes, and simple shuffle rhythms at the end of each phrase. The harmony is based on the blues scale, allowing students to work on playing C-natural and F-natural accidentals, the flat 3rd and the flat 7th degrees in D major. The optional piano accompaniment offers harmonic and rhythmic support. Zydeco Zephyr starts out with some boogie-woogie and then moves to a fiddling style in the second half. Not only can you hear the train within the music, but this work also includes an opportunity for a soloist to improvise. An example solo is provided, but this is a great way to get your kids to express themselves musically.
Zydeco Zephyr combines elements of zydeco and bluegrass. Zydeco is a combination of many styles including Cajun, blues, and rock, and is known for its use of accordion, fiddle, and washboard. The first section of Zydeco Zephyr is influenced by doo-wop, a style zydeco musician Clifton Chenier used in his songs. The cellos introduce the second section with a “train” groove in m. 27. A solo section offers students the opportunity to improvise using a D mixolydian mode (D, E, F≥, G, A, B, C, D), and a sample solo is provided. This piece uses straighteighths (no swing!) and should be performed with a great deal of energy. The choral collection Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. Around 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required. As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Young composers from the USA (such as Courtney Carey, Marques Garrett) and arrangers from Canada, Denmark, and Germany (including Mark Sirett, John Hoybye, Thomas Gabriel, Carsten Gerlitz, Gunther Martin Gottsche, and Hans Ludemann) have contributed to this stylistically extremely varied choral collection. The medium difficulty level will enable many choirs to get to grips with the gospel style, something which perhaps few of them are very familiar with. Tips from the editors on performance, and a CD recording with a selection of the arrangements will help with learning the pieces. With their deep and emotional symbolism of captivity and repression on the one hand and redemption and freedom on the other hand, these Gospel settings are well-suited for many uses in concerts and church services.
