Il teatro d’opera, all’interno dell’intero patrimonio musicale del repertorio cólto, ma per dir meglio, all’interno del portato culturale che ha investito – tramite la sua nascita – dapprima l’Italia e poi l’Europa tutta, mantiene inalterato nel tempo un riconoscimento di grande valore.
In virtù di questo primato, un’attenzione particolare gli è conferita anche in questa sede, nella quale si è voluto condurre lo studente alla scoperta di tre importanti capolavori.
Diversamente da quanto si sia portati a credere, l’opera non è unicamente repertorio per vecchi e canuti parrucconi, ma è spettacolo in grado di catturare anche un pubblico d’età scolare.
Attraverso le molteplici espressioni con le quali l’opera si manifesta (musica e parola su tutte, ma anche gesto e danza, insieme a gestione dello spazio scenico e della luce, elementi che definiscono tutti la complessa dimensione drammaturgica), il teatro d’opera si pone come spettacolo multimediale ante litteram capace come pochi di riassumere esemplarmente in un solo concetto rappresentazioni di pienezza e complessità culturale assai variegate.
Nel tratteggiare la ricchezza di un viaggio alla scoperta dell’opera, si potrebbe affermare che addentrarsi nelle narrazioni di un Figaro, di un Don Giovanni, di un Rigoletto sia un po’ come se da un solo assaggio si degustassero più sapori, come se si riuscisse a cogliere l’intero panorama solamente sbirciando da un foro. In questa operazione si possono identificare gli estremi di una visione ologrammatica della realtà, quella che ci consente di mettere in evidenza come una parte sia inscritta nel tutto, ma quanto il tutto stesso costituisca una parte. Questo apparente paradosso, che ci sembra possa essere rappresentato anche dal teatro musicale, è alla base di quell’atteggiamento che ci consente di evitare operazioni di riduzionismo e di semplificazione, e di aumentare invece i livelli di relazione e di complessità con le esperienze che ci accadono.

Il quaderno si rivolge ad allievi non digiuni dei primi rudimenti di alfabetizzazione sonora ed esplora – data la specificità della collana – soprattutto la dimensione musicale, anche se non tralascia di guidare all’indagine delle relazioni che la musica ha con gli altri linguaggi che costruiscono lo spettacolo.
Non è un caso, per di più, che ancora una volta e come costante metodologica che accompagna tutti i quaderni, ci si avvalga anche qui del segno, del gesto, della parola come strategie per la conoscenza dei mezzi espressivi e per l’esplorazione dei significati, tutti meccanismi necessari ad innescare un ascolto attivo.
La scelta di opere e autori si è imposta quasi naturalmente: Mozart, Rossini, Verdi sono ovunque riconoscibili come figure emblematiche del genere operistico. Nessuno potrebbe affermare di aver assaggiato la Sacher Torte senza essere stato a Vienna, così come nessuno potrebbe sostenere di aver assaporato l’opera senza aver avuto occasione di avvicinarsi a questi tre autori.
L’intento del quaderno è dunque quello di fornire supporti all’allievo e all’insegnante per favorire scoperte, per far nascere curiosità.
Gli obiettivi del lavoro si perdono però a metà strada nel momento in cui non si ponga a conclusione del percorso la visione dell’opera.
L’auspicio e l’invito è dunque quello di uscire dalle aule e di recarsi, senza esitazioni, a teatro.
Il valore estetico e il potere seduttivo di un capolavoro sono in grado di disvelarsi talvolta senza che si operi nessun tipo di facilitazione (seppur la preparazione del campo, come questo testo vuole dimostrare, non sia certo operazione inutile); ma, quasi certamente, nessun magnetico incanto potrà fuoriuscire se ci si arresterà unicamente alle esperienze di queste pagine.

L’Istituto Storico Austriaco a Roma, in collaborazione con la Sezione di Storia della Musica dell’Istituto Storico Germanico a Roma, il Comitato Scientifico degli Opera omnia di Muzio Clementi e il Da Ponte-Institut für Librettologie, Don Juan-Forschung und Sammlungsgeschichte di Vienna, ha organizzato dal 4 al 6 dicembre 2002 un symposium internazionale di studi dal titolo Muzio Clementi. Cosmopolita della musica, che ha inteso riunire nella città natale dell’autore i maggiori esperti di Clementi in occasione del 250° anniversario della nascita del compositore.
I numerosi interventi del symposium si sono articolati in complessive 4 sezioni (Muzio Clementi nel 250^o anniversario della nascita; Clementi: un romano a Londra; L’altro Clementi; Clementi e la «Wiener Klassik»), svoltesi presso la sede dell’Istituto Storico Austriaco (5 e 6 dicembre).
La manifestazione ha messo in luce soprattutto la dimensione europea degli interscambi culturali dovuti al fenomeno delle migrazioni dei musicisti, dei rapporti internazionali inerenti all’editoria, all’impresariato e al commercio degli strumenti a tastiera.

Laudate Regem - or Praise the King! After a reign of 33 years, Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, stepped down from the throne to make way for her eldest son Willem-Alexander. For this special occasion, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden haswritten a majestic work for the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, which sounded at precisely the moment the new king left the Nieuwe Kerk after his inauguration. Deze muziek werd gespeeld op het moment dat de koninklijke familie de Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam verliet, en het werd door de Kapel van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht tevens gespeeld tijdens de NationaleHerdenkingsplechtigheid op 4 mei. Na een korte beginfanfare volgt een prachtige, gedragen melodie waarin even muzikaal verwezen wordt naar het Wilhelmus. Naar het eind toe volgt een overweldigend slot. Laudate Regem, oder: Preiset den König! Nach einer Regierungszeit von 33 Jahren hat Beatrix, Königin der Niederlande, am 30. April 2013 den Thron für ihren ältesten Sohn Willem-Alexander frei gemacht. Für diesen besonderen Anlassschrieb Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden ein majestätisches Werk für das Orchester der Königlich Niederländischen Luftwaffe, die genau in dem Moment erklang, als der neue König die Nieuwe Kerk nach seiner Amtseinführung in Amsterdamverließ. This piece, as the title might suggest, brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. Amongst his best hits are Nabucco from 1842, which signified a turn-around after the flop of a previous opera, as well as Rigoletto, which in 1851 propelled him to international fame. Verdi’s Triumphs features: Triumphmarch and Su! Del nilo al sacro lido from Aida, the Prisoners’ Freedom Choir from Nabucco and La donna è mobile from Rigoletto.

Zoals de titel al doet vermoeden, brengt dit werk de grootste triomfen van Verdi samen. Zijn bekendste opera’s zijn ongetwijfeld Nabucco uit 1842, maar ook Rigoletto uit 1851. Deze opera’s bezorgden hem eeuwige roem. In Verdi’s Triumphs vinden we de Triumphmarch en Su! Zu Verdis größten Triumphen zählen sicherlich die Opern Nabucco von 1842, die eine Wende nach einigen Misserfolgen markierte, Rigoletto, die ihm 1851 zum internationalen Durchbruch verhalf und Aida, die er zur Eröffnung des Suezkanals schrieb. Auch aus heutiger Sicht sind gerade diese Werke besonders bekannt und beliebt. Daher wählte Wil van der Beek für sein Arrangement die folgenden Titel: Triumphmarsch und Su! Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume. Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities. Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). Fanfare for Korea was commissioned by the first Korea International Concert band Festival, which took place in 2010, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In this triumphant fanfare, composer Jacob de Haan uses the melody of Arirang, the most popular folk song in Korea. The Korea Festival Concert band performed the première at the festival, conducted by de Haan himself.

Fanfare for Korea is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het eerste Korea International Wind Band Festival. Dit festival vond plaats in 2010. Zestig jaar eerder brak in juni 1950 de oorlog uit in Korea. Ter gelegenheid van de herdenkinghiervan schreef Jacob de Haan deze compositie. In deze fanfare verwerkte hij de melodie van Arirang, het populairste en bekendste volkslied van Korea. Het Korea Festival Wind Orchestra verzorgde in Seoel de première tijdenshet festival onder leiding van Jacob de Haan zelf.

Fanfare for Korea wurde im Auftrag des 1. Koreanischen Internationalen Blasorchester-Festivals, das anlässlich des 60-jährigen Gedenkens an den Korea-Krieg stattfand, in Auftrag gegeben. Jacob de Haan verarbeitete in seinem Werk die Melodie von Arirang, dem beliebtesten und bekanntesten Volkslied Koreas. Das Korea Festival Orchestra sorgte während des Festivals in Seoul für die Uraufführung unter der Leitung von Jacob de Haan. As a composer, Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck and Grand Duke of Spain. All of his quartets feature a prominent first violin part and the Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the century in A-B-A form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked rondo.This lively Rondeau from Bologne's Six String Quartets, Op. 1 is a classic seven-part rondo with an ABACAB’A formula. The ‘A’ sections are set in G Major, ‘B’ in D Major, and ‘C’ in G Minor. As was typical of the Classical style, the primary melody is heard mainly in first violin, while other sections provide supporting harmonic and rhythmic roles. The essence of the string quartet scoring is retained by having the bass double the cello part. This makes more of this significant composer’s music accessible to school ensembles, resulting in a charming concert selection appropriate for concert or festival.

The violin concerto is commissioned by Friends of Dresden Music Foundation for American soloist Mira Wang and the New York Philharmonic and Staatskapelle Dresden as an American commemoration of the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche, 60 years after its destruction in World War II by American and British Forces. The world premiere is given at the Semperoper in Dresden, Germany, on October 9, 10 & 11, 2005, conducted by Ivan Fischer. Full of excitement and inner power, the musical image is vivid, energetic, sometimes lyrical and sometimes dramatic. The major angular thematic material (a three note motive) consists of big leaps in interval (a perfect fourth downward and then a minor seventh upward, first introduced by the violin solo in measures 27-29). Except for the cadenzas which stand at the middle (Rehearsal E, measure 127) and the two ends of the piece as a frame, the virtuosic violin solo line is always accompanied by the ever moving and growing textures in the background. The rests between long and short phrases symbolize the space in Chinese paintings. The Beijing Opera reciting tune, and the fingerings to produce sliding tones in the performance of the Chinese fiddle erhu are also borrowed in the writing and the performing of the western instruments. It's like the welcome rain on a quiet spring night that nurtures the budding seeds, our new society is pushing us forward to the new future. The music reflects the scenes and the expression according to the meaning of the poem when it's being unfolded line by line. Although the tempo is set 63 quarter notes per minute throughout (played vividly, never slow down), the tension is being built up from the quiet background in the beginning, to the sustained climax towards the end. The musical image in Rehearsal A and B (measures 39-80) represents the first four lines of the poem. The wind instruments response to the rustling of fast moving notes on muted string triplets, decorated by occasional strokes produced by metallic string sound and high woodwind gestures. The music in Rehearsal C and D (measures 81-126) represents the next two lines of the poem. It's so dark, a little light in the boat is shimmering on the lake... The breathy sound and key slaps on the flutes create a mysterious atmosphere, in a dialogue with other instruments. The cello glissandi recite the poem in the tone of Mandarin, echoed by the string harmonics. The music in Rehearsal F, G and H (m 129-202) is a toccata, starting in the orchestra (led by the marimba), which builds up a big shape, to reach the climax in m. 157 (Rehearsal G, the location of the Golden Section, according to the length of the music without cadenzas), and keeps the vivid scene towards the coda (from Rehearsal I, m. 203), which stands on the energetic peak until the clear cutoff on measure 239, followed by the short, yet powerful solo conclusion with the lingering echo produced by the high string harmonics. On the top, there is a recall of the three note motive in the sound of wonderland, touched by the motor-on vibraphone meaningfully. The music is written for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (in Bb), 2 bassoons, 4 French horns (in F), 2 trumpets (in Bb), 3 trombones, tuba, harp, 3 percussion players (Perc. 1: xylophone; Perc. 2: suspended cymbal, Japanese high woodblock, snare drum, bass drum and vibraphone; Perc. 3: marimba and tam-tam), solo violin, and strings. The music reflects the scenes and theexpression according to the meaning of the poem when it’s being unfolded line by line.Although the tempo is set 63 quarter notes per minute throughout (played vividly, neverslow down), the tension is being built up from the quiet background in the beginning, tothe sustained climax towards the end. The musical image in Rehearsal A and B (measures39-80) represents the first four lines of the poem. The wind instruments response to therustling of fast moving notes on muted string triplets, decorated by occasional strokesproduced by metallic string sound and high woodwind gestures. The music in RehearsalC and D (measures 81-126) represents the next two lines of the poem. It's so dark, a littlelight in the boat is shimmering on the lake... The breathy sound and key slaps on theflutes create a mysterious atmosphere, in a dialogue with other instruments. The celloglissandi recite the poem in the tone of Mandarin, echoed by the string harmonics. Themusic in Rehearsal F, G and H (m 129-202) is a toccata, starting in the orchestra (led bythe marimba), which builds up a big shape, to reach the climax in m. 157 (Rehearsal G,the location of the Golden Section, according to the length of the music withoutcadenzas), and keeps the vivid scene towards the coda (from Rehearsal I, m. 203), whichstands on the energetic peak until the clear cutoff on measure 239, followed by the short,yet powerful solo conclusion with the lingering echo produced by the high stringharmonics. On the top, there is a recall of the three note motive in the sound ofwonderland, touched by the motor-on vibraphone meaningfully.The music is written for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (in Bb), 2 bassoons, 4 French horns (in F), 2 trumpets (in Bb), 3 trombones, tuba, harp, 3 percussion players (Perc. 1:xylophone; Perc. 2: suspended cymbal, Japanese high woodblock, snare drum, bass drum and vibraphone; Perc. 3: marimba and tam-tam), solo violin, and strings.Duration is about 20 minutes.
