Zoltán Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.

'In publishing this collection of choral works we think with gratitude of our fellow countryman, Ferenc Liszt, one of those who have energized Hungarian musical life. We are conscious of a great debt, which we would like to repay at least in part. We are obliged to do so by Hungarian, European and universal musical culture, but perhaps even more by respect for Hungarian traditions and our duty to preserve them. Hence this publication, the seven works in which are appearing now in print for the first time in Hungary, and for the same reason this collection contains a complete list of Liszt's choral works.' The Stations of the Cross are a centuries-old element in worship services which are firmly anchored in the visual arts. There is hardly a Catholic church which does not include a representation of the via dolorosa in its interior design. Thus it is all the more astonishing that this subject is not nearly so widely portrayed in music. Franz Liszt (Via crucis) and Marcel Dupre, with his ingenious improvisation which later became a composition, are practically the only representatives of this genre of composition in music history. The present work for a cappella choir, three dancers, timpani, baritone and soprano soloists, oboe and organ offers a new approach to the literary model of the Stations of the Cross. The emphasis rests with the choir, which is responsible for six Stations of the Cross. Here, in part, the stations are assigned associative text from poetry (e.g., Christian Morgenstern and Michelangelo). Three dancers dance the three Stations of falling in a setting filled with black light, accompanied by a speech motet provided on CD. The organ appears in a solo capacity and as an accompaniment to the solo singers. The timpani announce the horror of death by crucifixion. Together this collage-like work forms a magnificent whole. The duration is 60 minutes.
