Nobody, premiered at the music festival Heidelberger Frühling in 2022, was written by Johannes Boris Borowski for Trio Catch. According to the composer, the work, which lasts a good quarter of an hour, “appears in playful, dreamy lightness. The surrounding atmosphere is tender and optimistic. However, a tragic and existential undertone becomes perceptible, in which the foreboding of theabsurd and horrific of life flares up time and again.†The composition, divided into six short prologues and the actual piece, is based on verses by Emily Dickinson, in which the poles of melancholy, rapture, tenderness and abysmalness are given archetypical expression and which, in their simple, yet visionary style of writing, perfectly correspond to Borowski's modern musical language. There are passages with brief interjections of other language levels in the poetic text, especially fragments and phrases from populist rhetoric, as well as vulgar and violent language.

Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering. The three movements (Serenata, Rondo, Notturno) of the 1966 Musica da camera per 11 reflect in their musical character on the neo-classical works of Stravinsky. Its modernity derives from Maros's instrumentation: the percussion and harp dominate among the eleven instruments, but the soaring lines of the melodic instruments - flute, two clarinets and violin - appear in the score as a signature typical of Maros. Perfect for pops concerts, SUITE NO. 3 provides a quaint time capsule of jazz-inspired classical music from 1939, soon after Gershwin’s death, and just before the hard-edged modern jazz of the 1940s. In this fast-slow-fast suite, “Take Five†refers only to relaxing for a few minutes (not the song composed decades later), and “B-Bop Major†is a musical pun that must have been added later.

Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€.Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine.

As part of the year 2023, dedicated to Swiss composers, the Swiss Wind Band Association has commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of the Overture in E-flat major by Stephan Jaeggi. Indeed, an update of the instrumentation was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras. Therefore, the orchestration that Gauthier Dupertuis proposes and which he wanted to be faithful to the original while meeting current standards, will allow todayÂ’s orchestras to perform this piece of classical-romantic inspiration. Stephan Jaeggi was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born into a large family in Fulenbach (Canton of Solothurn) in 1903. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, then studied music at the Basel Conservatory and attended his military training with the Swiss Army Band. Thereafter, he became the conductor of several wind orchestras. In this role, and also that of a composer, Stephan Jaeggi went on to achieve great success. His early death in 1957 put a premature end to Stephan Jaeggi's creative life. All the more reason why his work lives on with unbroken power to this day.

With his opera Hamlet, which premiered in Glyndebourne in 2017, the composer Brett Dean added a new, modern analysis to the certainly numerous artistic ones of the famous subject - with enormous success, as the press reviews and many subsequent stage productions attested. The composer's and his librettist Matthew Jocelyn's fruitful examination of Shakespeare's text material yielded both the full-length opera and several concertante “by-productsâ€: And once I played Ophelia for soprano and string quartet, From Melodious Lay, an orchestral poem with solo soprano and solo tenor, Confessio for solo bass clarinet, and the suite Gertrude Fragments for mezzo-soprano and guitar. The five miniatures, with their suitably intimate, dark instrumentation, throw light on various aspects of Hamlet's mother, who is both a guilty and a tragic, helpless figure.

Music in the homes of Vienna's aristocratsFranz Xaver Kleinheinz was employed at the court of Prince Elector Karl Theodor in Munich until 1799, when he left for Vienna after the Prince's death. There he met Beethoven, who was five years younger than Kleinheinz and who also very much admired him, so much so that Beethoven entrusted the young musician with arrangements of his own works. Moreover, Kleinheinz most likely owed it to Beethoven's recommendations that he obtained access to the most prestigious noble homes of the city, where he acquired an outstanding reputation as a piano teacher. This is when he composed the Piano Trio op. 13, which is now being presented in a modern edition. The title page of the sole surviving source - an alternative clarinet part that is unfortunately no longer extant - refers to an edition published in Vienna in 1802.Edition in cooperation with Leopold Mozart Competition, Augsburg.

The viol player Diego Ortiz, who was musical director at the court of the Spanish viceroy in Naples in the mid-16th century, wrote a textbook which became authoritative for the art of improvisation during the Renaissance. This textbook contains pieces with written improvisations in the tradition of the Renaissance period. Although the writing of improvisations was a contradiction in terms even then, Ortiz' pieces are excellent textbooks for the study of the structures and rules of this art.

Poul Ruders DIFERENCIASDIFERENCIAS was an old Spanish naming of musical compositions dealing with various techniques involving theme and variation. In modern Spanish it simply means differences. It's a nice title, however, and as to the present piece, a very fitting one indeed, because I wrote it especially to The Elsinore Players for their South America-tour in 1981.Actually nothing happens to the clipping of wellknown Bach (the first four bars of the chorale: jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, cantata No. 147), apart from the continuous changing of the succession-pattern of the 11 triplets and one duplet, the latter of which creates the recognizable 8/8 pattern amidst the flow of 9/8 spinnrad-rolling. To put it popularly, I haven't included anything that Bach does not have in the book himself. In addition to that, the unpredictable accents and various instrumental colours are the only means of differences. There are no modulations, no tricky polyphony, nothing but a long, thoughtful tasting the beautiful piece of tune. Well, of course, the chorale itself enters the picture in the very last section, but that is merely for me to have the pleasure of tossing it away again before it comes to a proper end. Finally, I really do think, that the Cage/Morgan poem quoted below, is the most suitable prologue to DIFERENCIAS:14 variations on 14 wordsI have nothing to say and I am saying it and that is poetry. John CageI have to say poetry and is that nothing and I am saying itI am and I have poetry to say and is that nothing saying itI am nothing and I have poetry to say and that is saying itI that am saying poetry have nothing and it is I and to sayAnd I say that I am to have poetry and saying it is nothingI am poetry and nothing and saying it is to say that I haveTo have nothing is poetry and I am saying that and I say itPoetry is saying I have nothing and I am to say that and itSaying nothing I am poetry and I have to say that and it isIt is and I am and I have poetry saying say that to nothingIt is saying poetry to nothing and I say I have and am that Poetry is saying I have it and I am nothing and to say that And that nothing is poetry I am saying and I have to say itSaying poetry is nothing and to that I say I am and have itEdwin MorganPoul Ruders.

Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three. This piece, however, combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title, of course, is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie, but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically, after a straightforward head-on opening, it breaks into isolated, jagged fragments, winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto, the piano part hovers in the front line, the same way the horizontal guy, ringing himself on the pavement, is doubtless an eye-catcher to passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, and Piano.

“These real masterpieces, even if only a few minutes long, are of tremendous melodiousness and expressiveness!”, Franz Schubert said about Friedrich Kuhlau's sonatinas. The four Sonatinas Op. 88 were written in 1827, i.e. during Friedrich Kuhlau's middle creative period, even before the great success of the opera “Elfenhügel.” and the year of Beethoven's death. All four works contain beautiful melodic ideas, but Sonatina Op. 88 No. 3 with its minor tonality, its free treatment of form and tempo in the first movement and the lively last movement is something special. Of medium difficulty, this sonatina is great fun to play. This edition is accompanied by a preface and “Teaching Notes” by Monika Twelsiek. It is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons. After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Mathias Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London. In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tanze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, clarinet, oboe (ad lib.), alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon and strings. Movements: Cake Walk - Novelty Foxtrot - Gipsy Tango - Waltz - Walzer - Blues - Charleston.

While Gordon Jacobs composed a vast amount of music - more than four hundred pieces -- he was particularly celebrated for his work for Viola and for woodwinds, as well as for his books on music pedagogy. Jacob had an early success with his Viola Concerto of 1926 which was premiered at a Promenade concert and which was the beginning of a series of strong contributions to Viola repertoire. This Sonatina for Viola and Piano demonstrates his sensitive writing for the instrument. It works very well when performed on clarinet as well. While many composers of the 20th century rejected serialism, atonality and other avant garde effects in favour of Romanticism, Jacob was much morean adherent to the musical models of the classic and baroque eras, while still encompassing modern harmonies. His work Music for a Festival, for symphonic wind band and brass ensemble, was used for the post-war Festival of Britain and he arranged the British national anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
