It was commissioned by Banda Municipal de Barcelona (Barcelona's municipal band) and performed for the first time on January 30th 2011 at L'Auditori de Barcelona (auditorium of Barcelona).

This concert is divided into three movements. The first, bearing the name of Preludi (Prelude), is slow and mysterious, with two alternating subject matters flowing gently. It is only towards the end that a rapid cadence of the piano leads to an orchestral tutti which will gradually fade within the general atmosphere.

The second movement is a Scherzo-Cadenza, always in a bar of 6/8, based on triplets and twangs but also tied at the most expressive moments. The piano and the wind and percussion instruments embark in a contrapuntal dialogue in which a burlesque character alternates with forceful moments. The movement ends subtly, with a long scale flowing from a low to a high pitch.

A cadence of the piano serves as a liaison with the third movement, an Allegro molto, the longest and most complex of the whole concert. This movement is clearly virtuosic and it consists of three main subject matters which alternate and blend. The atmosphere is lively and unmistakably burlesque, although there are three thoughtful moments in which it becomes mysterious. The coda is fast, bright and clearly conclusive.

Lennox Berkeley was born in 1903 and died in 1989. After reading modern languages at Oxford he had no intention of becoming a composer until he met Ravel in 1926, who encouraged him to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He stayed in Paris until 1932, developing his own musical language. In 1936, after the death of his mother, he went to Barcelona for the International Society for Contemporary Music festival where he met Benjamin Britten. The two lived together at Snape in Suffolk for a while until the outbreak ofwar, before Berkeley moved back to London to work for the BBC. Here he met his future wife Freda Bernstein. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1946 until 1968, where his pupils included Richard Rodney Bennett, Nicholas Maw and John Tavener, among others. He was knighted in 1974.

In early February 1971 I was playing in a concert at St. John's Smith Square, London, then only relatively recently restored as a superb venue for music. The programme, which I believe was being broadcast, included Berkeley's Serenade Op.12. It was a work I had always enjoyed playing and was standard string orchestra repertoire at the time. There was initially no platform at St. John's and so the audience sat virtually on top of the performers. So close were they on this occasion that I had to ask for a little more room in order to play. At the end of the piece the orchestra acknowledged the applause and the gentleman who I had all but practically decapitated with my over-enthusiastic playing, stood up and took a bow. I had been almost playing in Lennox Berkeley's lap! The opportunity was too good to miss and I wasted little time in introducing myself. Mr Berkeley said that he had been fascinated by my playing and asked me to write to him about a possible commission.

Das Concerto da camera will weder eine barockisierende noch avantgardistische Musik fur die Blockflote sein - sondern ein instrumentgerechtes, abwechslungsreiches, temperamentvolles Stuck. Der Solopart (im Wechsel von Alt- und Piccolo-Flote) ist virtuos und ausdrucksstark zugleich angelegt, unter Berucksichtigung der in den letzten Jahren fur die Blockflote speziell entwickelten Techniken (uberblasene Akkorde, Flackergerausche, Fingervibrato etc.). Die relativ umfangreiche Orchesterbesetzung (funf Holz-, vier Blechblaser, Harfe, Schlagwerk, Streicher) soll farbige Kontraste schaffen und verschiedene Strukturen verdeutlichen. Im ersten Satz, einem knappen ,,Preludio bringt das Solo-Instrument verfremdete Zitate aus dem langsamen Satz eines Telemann-Konzertes (a-moll) uber Klangflachen von Streichern und Blasern. Zweiter Satz: Ein mehrteiliges, rhapsodisches Allegro, bei dem der Part der Blockflote von Repetitionsfiguren bestimmt wird. Das Orchester setzt mosaikahnliche kurze dodekaphonische und serielle Klanggruppen und -blocke dagegen. Im ruhigeren Zwischenteil korrespondiert die Solostimme mit dichtem polyphon gefuhrten Streicherensemble. Der langsame Satz , Mittelpunkt des ganzen Konzerts, entwickelt sich als weit ausgesponnene Fantasie und kristallisiert sich um die einzelnen Zeilen der alten Liedweise ,,Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen - ,,auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit. Ein rhythmisch eigenwilliges zwolftoniges Bass-Ostinato beherrscht das Finale, greift allmahlich in steter Steigerung auf alle Stimmen uber und ubertont schliesslich den Solopart. Nach kurzer Klimax kehrt das Thema nach und nach in die Bassregister zuruck, wahrend das Solo-Instrument mit virtuosen Spielfiguren dominiert. Eine Fanfare und eine im Unisono aus der Hohe herabschiessende Figur leiten diesen letzten Satz ein, erscheinen in der Mitte und am Ende, ehe eine humorvolle Stretta das Werk beschliesst. Das ,,Concerto da camera ist an kein festes Kompositionsprinzip gebunden; es konfrontiert den relativ zarten Klang der Blockflote mit den verschiedenen lautstarkeren Orchestergruppen und zeigt in diesem Spannungsfeld die Moglichkeiten und Grenzen des Soloinstruments auf. Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Wir schlüpfen in die Haut von Miguel und reisen mit ihm nach Australien. Einigermaßen entfremdet von seiner spanischen Heimat schlendert er durch das Viertel The Rocks in Sydney. Auf einem kleinen Markt entdeckt er einen Druck des Gemäldes Pacific Dreams von William DeShazo. Das Bild stellt die Meeresbrandung auf einer exotischen Insel im Pazifik dar. Während die eindrucksvolle Harbour Bridge von Sidney vor ihm auftaucht, ist er in Gedanken bei den heißen Stränden im Stillen Ozean. Auf einmal kommt ihm das Thema in den Sinn, das er einst über die Gewässer Japans komponiert hatte. Liegt es an den asiatischen Einflüssen, die im kosmopolitischen Sydney so vielfältig vertretensind? Oder sind es die Wasser rund um Sydney, über die er nach Tahiti segeln könnte? Er ist sich unsicher. Könnte er genau dieses Thema für eine neue Komposition über die Metropole Sydney verwenden? Wie sollte er seine Träume vom Pazifik, seine Pacific Dreams, in diese Mixtur einbringen? Vielleicht könnte er den Wortschatz von Inseln wie Hawaii und Tahiti für seine Komposition verwenden. Und einen gemischten Chor die schönen Vokalverbindungen ad libitum singen lassen. Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf steigt er in die Metro am Circular Quay. Auf ins Hotel und frisch ans Werk! Jetzt muss er einfach komponieren....

The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region.The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost createswill keep the audience engaged through to the very last note!

De opdrachtgever van dit werk is op meerdere wijze verbonden aan de componist. Hierdoor is By the River een zeer persoonlijk en indrukwekkend werk geworden. Het eerste deel heeft het karakter van een pastorale en beschrijfthet landelijke karakter van een - in basis - industrieel gebied. In sterk contrast daarop volgt een dynamisch allegro met toespelingen op Leonard Bernstein. Alle registers van het moderne blaasorkest komen aan hun trekken in Bythe River. Maar ook het publiek wordt flink op de proef gesteld, wil het alle thematische en melodische elementen van dit afwisselende werk doorgronden..!

Dem Auftraggeber dieses Werkes ist der Komponist in mehrfacher Weise sehr verbunden, wodurch By the River ein sehr personliches und eindringliches Werk geworden ist. Der erste Teil ist von pastoralem Charakter und beschreibt den landlichenCharakter einer eigentlichen Industrieregion. Stark kontrastiv folgt darauf ein dynamisches Allegro mit einer Anspielung auf Leonard Bernstein. Alle Register des modernen Blasorchesters sind in By the River gefordert, genau wie dieAufmerksamkeit des Publikums, wenn es alle thematischen und melodischen Elemente dieses abwechslungsreichen Werkes erfassen will.

By the River (Pres de la rivere) est une oeuvre que Jan van der Roost affectionne tout particulierement. La premiere partie s'ouvre sur motif plutot pastoral et decrit le caractere assez rural des gens du paysvivant dans une certaine region industrielle.
