The “Occasional Oratorio†was composed as a reaction to a political event which shook the whole of England : the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-46 against the Hanoverian monarchy was crushed under the leadership of the Duke of Cumberland. Handel, who was working on the oratorio “ Judas Maccabaeus†at the time, composed the oratorio quickly and reused some movements from earlier works. With the choice of a libretto by Newburgh Hamilton he demonstrated his support for the monarchy. The work was first performed on 14 February 1746 at the Covent Garden Theatre in London . For the first time this seldomly performed oratorio which nevertheless contains wonderful music is available in an Urtext edition based on the “ Halle Handel Edition†. All available sources have been consulted. Further movements which Handel added for later performances are included in the appendix.

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!Maple Leaf Overture gaat natuurlijk over het bekendste herkenningsteken van Canada: het blad van de esdoorn, in de vlag. Sparke componeerde dit openingswerk speciaal voor een Canadees schoolorkest uit Calgary, voor hun tour door Groot-Brittannië.Een korte fanfare gaat in deze ouverture naadloos over in een jazzachtig, syncopisch vivo. Un tema principale, all’inizio eseguito dai corni e dai sassofoni, sar in seguito ripreso da tutto l’organico. Segue un motivo più dolce che si intercala progressivamente verso un’apoteosi nella qualeviene riproposto il tema principale. Il brano si conclude con un breve richiamo alla fanfara di apertura, seguita da una rapida coda.

Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival.Singapura is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a somewhat altered form.Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fastbourrée. As contrast there is a second authentic melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning. ‘Singapura’ is de oorspronkelijke naam van Singapore in het Maleis, de originele taal van deze stadstaat. Omdat Singapore een van de belangrijkste havens ter wereld is, opent de componist met een ‘zeemansdans’. Ook de authentiekemelodie Chan Mali Chan is te herkennen. This march, opus 470 in Johann Strauss the Younger’s oeuvre, was dedicated to the k.u.k. (Royal) Infanterie-Regiment ‘Hoch und Deutschmeister No. 4’ on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. In 1896 this joyful event was celebrated with a grand concert featuring no less than seven military bands, with more than 350 musicians performing. Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,†Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.
