SKU: PA.H07942 Czech title: L'Attraction et la necessite. Classical. Book, CD. With Publication language: French. Editio Baerenreiter Praha #H07942_00. Published by Editio Baerenreiter Praha (PA.H07942). ISBN 9788086385273. 23 x 16 cm inches. Between the 1890s and World War II the axis of Paris - Prague was found to be incredibly attractive. Its attraction lay in sharing mutual political and social values and led to the demand of certain cultural and artistic unity. The aim of this book is to raise questions regarding the musical works of this period, and discuss which musical works show this 'affinity in choice'. During the course of the 20th century 'cultural polarities' started blurring, and paradoxically enough it was not one of the Slav countries, but Paris where Czech composers reinvented, through the Neo-Classical style ( mainly Stravinski's) their 'Eastern pole': light and archaic themes, a specific register of folk and trivial music, and the preference for creative spontaneity in compositions. Which features in the direction taken by Bohuslav Martinu can be regarded as typical of this tendency? What were the positions of the other Czech composers such as Leos Janacek, Alois Haba, Karel Husa, Jaroslav Jezek and others, and artists working in the musical, artistic or literal fields, for instance Arne Hosek, Milada Souckova, Jiri Kolar, Milan Slavicky, Milan Kundera, within this context? The analysis of these questions regarding the whole of the 20th century is completed with several so far unpublished or unknown sources. $41.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

Son et lumière (“sound and light,†a kind of show staged for tourists at historic sites or famous buildings) is an orchestral entertainment whose subject is the play of colors, bright surfaces, and shimmery textures. I have tried in this music to recapture the élan and immediacy that regular meters and repetitive rhythms make possible—something forbidden during the modernist regime but recently restored in the post-modern work of composers like John Adams, Steve Reich, and others. Throughout its brief nine-minute span, then, the piece is built almost exclusively of short, busy ostinato figures—my attempt, I suppose, to achieve the rhythmic vitality of minimalism, but without giving in to the over-simple harmonic language that usually comes with it.Surprisingly, the musical materials seemed determined to shape themselves into an approximation of nineteenth-century sonata form. We hear an introduction, a first theme (based on triadic broken chords), a second theme (beginning with the flute solo), and a closing theme (led by two piccolos). In a sort of development section, these materials are recombined in new ways; in a recapitulation, both the first and second themes are recalled more or less intact (part of the second is actually repeated quite literally). Then, in the coda, a second surprise: as if another, different music has been lurking all the while behind the shiny surface, the strings now unexpectedly split off from the rest of the orchestra to assert a new, more passionate, more “serious†voice, transcending the external show of sound and light.Son et lumière, commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, was composed between June and December 1988 in Ithaca (N.Y.), in Los Angeles, and at the artists’ colony Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs (N.Y.). David Zinman conducted the first performance in Baltimore on 18 May 1989; André Previn gave the West Coast premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on 18 January, 1990. There is no doubt that the goal of singing each other's liturgical music as an expression of the catholicity of our faith embodied in this volume, does in fact allow bilingual and multicultural parishes through the United States—and beyond—to respond to the liturgical needs of today while opening the door to new possibilities. — Becca Whitla The Hymn Society Journal. | Caminemos con Jesús GIA Publications
SKU: GI.G-1064 Composed by Tony Alonso S.J. Sacred. GIA Publications #106...(+)
SKU: GI.G-1064 Composed by Tony Alonso S.J. Sacred. GIA Publications #1064. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-1064). UPC: 785147006428. From the music of the Buena Vista Social Club to Gloria Estefan, the lyrical melodies and infectious rhythms of Cuban music have become embedded in U.S. culture. With Caminemos con Jesús / Let Us Walk with Jesus, composer Tony Alonso presents a groundbreaking collection of liturgical music that calls on his own Cuban musical heritage to provide new ways of singing the liturgy in Spanish, English or bilingually. The first project of its kind, Caminemos con Jesús not only utilizes rich Cuban idioms but also explores what style and musical form can teach us about praying together across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The dynamic call-and-response form that is a hallmark of traditional Cuban music makes these songs especially compelling choices for bilingual worship, allowing assemblies to learn, internalize, and pray easily in both Spanish and English. “Qué AlegrÃa Cuando Me Dijeron / I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say†uses the words of the psalm as a rhythmic mantra, creating a fresh and engaging way to gather as the Body of Christ. “LetanÃa a la Madre de las Américas / Litany of Mary of The Americas,†invokes the Mary of many names and nations with a simple yet strong response that will enliven Marian feasts throughout the year. The gentle simplicity of “Tres Guajiros / Three Peasants†re-imagines the story of the Magi as humble peasants bringing gifts of the land to honor the newborn Jesus. Also, in this collection and for the first time in published form, is Gloria Estefan’s “Caridad,†a powerful and poetic prayer to Our Lady of Charity, the patroness of Cuba. All of the pieces of this collection focus on the importance of bringing the voices of the assembly to the forefront while the arrangements are skillfully crafted to be accessible to musicians of all abilities. In addition to the spiral-bound edition, individual octavos, and flute and brass parts, Caminemos con Jesús offers a special edition featuring parts for guitar, percussion and other instruments central to Cuban music. The studio recording is a stunning source of prayer and inspiration, produced in Miami by Grammy Award winner Juan Delgado and featuring some of the finest Cuban-American musicians today. GIA Publications, Inc. is committed to responding to the rich diversity of the contemporary Church. With Caminemos con Jesús, we offer you our very best bilingual music for the liturgical year. “The music of my father’s Cuban homeland has been the language of my heart for as long as I can remember. These songs infuse that rich tradition with the unique sabor of my own experience as a Cuban-American in a distinctly liturgical shape that I hope will inspire others in their daily camino con Jesús.†–Tony Alonso Featuring “Live Mercy, Be Holy / Vive la Misericordia, Vive la Santidad,†the 2020 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress theme song! Guitar solo - Advanced SKU: DZ.DZ-4287 Composed by Francisco Braga. Arran...(+)
Guitar solo - Advanced SKU: DZ.DZ-4287 Composed by Francisco Braga. Arranged by Luciano Lima. Score. Les Productions d'OZ #DZ 4287. Published by Les Productions d'OZ (DZ.DZ-4287). ISBN 9782898522048. Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) belongs to the generation of Brazilian composers of the first republican period, aesthetically tied to romanticism, alongside Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914), and Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 15th, 1868, he began his musical studies at the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, in 1876. In 1883, he enrolled at the Imperial Conservatório de Música where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Carlos de Mesquita – a former student of César Franck, Durand, and Massenet – and clarinet with Antônio Luís de Moura. Braga's first compositions date from this period: Sonho de Dante (1885), Dolce far niente (1886), the first Valse Romantique for piano (1886), among others. In 1887, he premiered his first symphonic work, Fantasia-Abertura. In 1890, being one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, Braga was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. During this period, he wrote some of his most important symphonic works, Paysage, Cauchemar, Episódio Sinfônico, and Marabá (which was performed by Richard Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1920, in Brazil). His opera Jupyra is considered one of the greatest Brazilian compositions of that genre. Back in Brazil, he was appointed professor of counterpoint, fugue, and composition at the Instituto Nacional de Música, in 1902. There, some of the finest Brazilian composers studied with him, like Glauco Velásquez and Lorenzo Fernândez. Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns, the most popular of which is Hino à Bandeira (with lyrics by Olavo Bilac). He explored Brazilian nationalist elements in some of his works, as in Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro and in the Trio for violin, cello and piano, whose third movement is based on a lundu (a musical genre and dance of Afro-Brazilian origin). In addition to being a composer, Braga was one of the most active conductors of his time, having been ahead of three orchestras in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto Nacional de Música, Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos, and Theatro Municipal. Braga conducted the Brazilian premiere of major symphonic works such as La Mer (Debussy), Pacific 231 (Honegger) besides other numerous Brazilian compositions. In 1938, he retired from Instituto Nacional de Música. He passed away on March 14th, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, Francisco Braga never wrote for the guitar. However, over a century ago his music had already been incorporated to its repertoire. According to information found in newspapers of the time, Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil: Gavota e Minuete (from the melodrama Contratador de Diamantes), in 1919, in São Paulo, and the waltz-caprice Corrupio, in 1921, in Rio de Janeiro. The piano score of Madrigal Pavane was dedicated to Alexina Leitão and published by Casa Vieira Machado, in 1901. According to the composer’s catalogue, there are two other versions of this piece: strings orchestra (1901) and quartet (which is still in manuscript). Dedicated to Braga’s childhood friend José de Souza Rocha, Timburibá (the name of a Brazilian tree) is a tango for piano from 1886, published by Narciso & Arthur Napoleão.
Washed up on the Phaeacian shore after a shipwreck, Odysseus is introduced to King Alcinous. As he sits in the palace, he tells the Phaeacians of his wanderings since leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men fi rst landed on the island of the Cicones wherethey sacked the city of Ismarus. From there, great storms swept them to the land of the hospitable Lotus Eaters. Then they sailed to the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and twelve of his men entered the cave of Polyphemus. After the single-eyed giantmade handfuls of his men into meals, Odysseus fi nally defeated him. He got him drunk and once he had fallen asleep, he and his men stabbed a glowing spike into the Cyclop’s single eye, completely blinding him. They escaped by clinging to the belliesof some sheep. Once aboard, Odysseus taunted the Cyclop by revealing him his true identity. Enraged, Polyphemus hurled rocks at the ship, trying to sink it. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island, they arrived at the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca, the crewmen, curious about the bag, decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea, the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him, Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave, Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There, he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother, Anticleia, and met the spirits of Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Antilochus, Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos, Tantalus, and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened, ran back to his ship, and sailed away. While back at Aeaea, Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear, thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship, which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster), but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally, Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past, but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep, his men impiouslykilled and ate some of the cattle. When the Sun god found out, he asked Zeus to punish them. Shortly after they set sail from the island, Zeus destroyed the ship and all the men died except for Odysseus. After ten days, Odysseus was washed up on theisland of the nymph Calypso.

Little Piano Pieces - Kleine Klavierstücke - Petites pièces pour piano. Par ORBÁN GYÖRGY. György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children's pieces for Ágnes Lakos's four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (EMBZ14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (EMBZ14742). The New Bell includes a further 19 piano pieces for beginners - among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy's Children's Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny's alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands, which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student. / Niveau : Facile à Intermédiaire / Pédagogie / Répertoire / Piano

Winter Cantata / Vinterkantate (1976) by Per Nørgård for a variable ensemble o...(+)
Winter Cantata / Vinterkantate (1976) by Per Nørgård for a variable ensemble of soloist mixed choir and instruments (minimum: vocalist and organ). Programme Note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: ?The Year? and ?Choral Hymn?. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the 3rd Symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals which inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on thesemelodies: ?Frost Psalm? ?Winter Cantata? ? Winter Hymn? ?Cantica? and others. One of these ´Sarvig melodies´ is now included in the new Danish Hymnbook under the title ?Året?(The Year). Ole Sarvig´s poem ?Året? (The Year) is Danish perhaps Scandinavian in character but its symbolic atmosphere is global (now snow is covering the whole earth). The basic composition of this cantata based on Sarvig´s many verses was done by letting soloist choir and instruments change in feelings and moods: from the almost silent inward-looking beginning (I: Chorale dolorosa) to a dancelike and happy optimism (II: A heaven germ on winged foot thrust deep into the earth its root) followed by nightmarish tone rows as the ?year-wheel of fortune? is turning (III: Sacrifice The Year) and the temptations of the snake (IV: In Paradiso) to the allegorical fights between egoism and altruism (V:The Cycle Autumn. Purgatory) before the ?waiting for a disaster?- atmosphere at the end of this choral Odyssé. Winter Cantata was from the beginning (1976) designed as an open work to be arranged by different combinations of soloists choir and (different) instruments. The printed version by Per Nørgård and Ivan hansen for soloist mixed choir and instruments (obo violin trombone vibraphone/percussion and organ) is from 1990. The work

Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Epigramas Cervantinos was commissioned by pianist Marta Espinós and the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musica (CNDM) in Madrid. With an approximate duration of 12:30 minutes, the work responds to the author's admiration for the work of Miguel de Cervantes and to the artistic complicities established with Marta Espinós, to whom the work is dedicated. The pieces that make up this triptych are intended to evoke some of the expressive types and characters that we recognise in Cervantes' prodigious legacy - from Don Quixote to the delightful Exemplary Novels - covering a wide range of emotions that range from burlesque to pages of a melancholic and contemplative nature, passing through more impulsive passages and others of conspicuous rhythmic vivacity. The profound charge of humanity that these texts exude is translated into a highly contrasted and colourful piano treatment, at times brilliant and not without virtuosity. The premiere of the work, by the aforementioned performer, took place during the inaugural concert of the Commemorative Events of the 4th Centenary of the death of the illustrious writer, held on 22 April 2016 in the Reading Room of the National Library of Spain (Madrid). / Date parution : 2022-04-01/ Répertoire / Piano

During his stay in America (September 1892 April 1895) Dvorák filled his sketchbooks with thematic concepts many of which he used soon after in the compositions he created there; others he retained unused. In the summer of 1894 he interrupted his American stay and spent most of the holidays at his favourite retreat in the village of Vysoká u Pr brame. In his moments of rest in his beloved Czech countryside the composer was struck with the idea to create a number of trifles for Piano and for these he used some of the thematic material from his recent two-year stay over the ocean. Thus began the cycle which he only later called?Humoresques? and which was published by Simrock immediately in the autumn of 1894. The seventh Humoresque was soon published in arrangements for all kinds of instruments and became one of his most popular pieces ever. The publication is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Anton n Dvorák.

Par PAUS RAMON. The composition represents an apparently contradictory quality and colour, since the colour enunciated in the title of the work does not have lightness as an essential component of its chromatic nature. In the course of this work, very light arpeggios are traversed where the melody of the upper voice appears fragmented while the performer completes the rest of the notes harmonically associated with this melody. This fragmentation, far from cutting the singing line, gives this melody a special way of being. In contrast to these passages where lightness and fluidity are essential characteristics, others appear where double, triple and even quadruple strings are present, giving the work a more leaden aspect. / Date parution : 2022-02-03/ Répertoire / Violon

In adapting Chopin?s masterful Nocturne No 2 for Guitar Francisco Tárrega simplified some sections while retaining the flavour style and delicacy of the original. It is a work of extreme difficulty for Guitarists and is just one of the many works by Chopin Mendelssohn Beethoven and others that Tárrega adapted.Modern proponents of serious Guitar may not know the debt they owe to Francisco Tárrega who began his performing and teaching career at a time when the Guitar was at a particularly low ebb in the late 1800?s. He studied Guitar and Piano and with the acquisition of an especially loud instrument by a luthier in Seville he launched a stage career following study atthe Madrid Conservatory. Through his tours and his pupils Tárrega influenced the popularity of the Guitar in the 20th century enormously.
