Pleading is a song for solo voice with Piano accompaniment, written in 1908. It was composed for, and dedicated to, the composer's great friend Lady Maud Warrender. It was published as the composer's opus 41 in three arrangements: No. 1 is for medium voice, and is set in the Key of G major. Versions for low and high voices are also available. The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon.

The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong, though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897, scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880's. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work, especially with the composer's fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit - and its partner, Chanson de Matin - at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. The plot of Elgar's King Olaf cantata has been criticized for it lack of cohesion, but the musical settings contain power, majesty, stirring melodies, joyous lyricism and a finale of immense proportion and emotional effect. As a lesser work of a great composer, it certainly bears study. As a work on its own, King Olaf rewards performers and listeners with superb moments. A final a capella Chorus, As Torrents In Summer, is frequently performed on its own.Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf is widely considered to be the best of Elgar's pre-Enigma compositions. He was commissioned to write this work for the North Staffordshire Music Festival in 1896, and he chose to adaptsections of Longfellow's Tales of a Wayside Inn with the assistance of his neighbour, the translator H A Acworth. Acworth reduced the length of Longfellow's twenty-two sections to just eight with added material.
