Finally performable again Eduard Franck's Piano Concerto in D minor Op. 13 is the first major orchestral work by this Mendelssohn pupil. The pianist, already celebrated at a young age, had early plans for the piano concerto that he completed at the latest in 1846. Contemporary critics emphasized the catchy motives and the balanced relationship of solo instrument to the orchestra. Ignaz Moscheles was impressed by the noble manner, the poetic ideas, and the orchestration. Thanks to the kind support of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, in whose library the orchestral parts, once thought to be lost, are preserved, the work can be introduced for the first time in the present edition.

Eduard Franck's two Violoncello Sonatas opp. 6 and 42 were published in 1843 and 1882, respectively, thus, almost 40 years apart. Although no authentic manuscripts sources are extant, the sonatas were likely composed fairly close to the years of their publication. That for decades Eduard Franck was reluctant to publish some of his works is well known; this then led him, only a few years before his death, to pour out a cornucopia of new compositions, some of them composed decades earlier. With this new edition of the two sonatas we are offering an important addition to the field of romantic cello sonatas.

Sonata No. 2 op. 23 was composed around 1859 in Cologne. At that time, Franck was working as a teacher of music theory at the Cologne Conservatory. The 2nd violin sonata was published in print together with the 1st sonata op. 19. This is an early proof of the composer's later tendency to combine several works in one cycle.

Sonata No. 1 op. 19 was composed around 1853 in Cologne. At that time, Franck was working as a teacher of music theory at the Cologne Conservatory, and it is assumed that he composed the sonata mainly for his own concert performances. The work came into being through his acquaintance with the young, highly talented violinist Theodor Pixis (1831-1856), who also premiered the sonata.
