Latin Chants for the Ordinary of the Mass, with Chants for other occasions. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican II asks that care should be taken in preparing the books of Gregorian Chant - #117 care should be taken in the production of editions to include simple melodies for use in small parish churches. The first edition of the Liber Cantualis was published in 1995 and has been re-edited mainly to achieve a good English translation of the texts. It contains the most familiar chants of the Mass, and four examples of the Alleluias. A second part contains chants for the sprinkling of Holy Water at Sunday Masses, seven easy to sing settings of the Ordinaries (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus) two Credo (Creeds), Mass for the Dead, and the best known Sequences: Victimae Paschali Laudes, Veni Sancti Spiritus, Ecce Panis (Lauda Sion), Stabat Mater, a third part includes various chants in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady and also chants for different liturgical Seasons, Gospel texts (magnificat, etc.), a few psalms and the complete Office of Compline. Many different countries and parishes use pieces in Latin and Gregorian Chant. This little book, with an English translation, may be of great help.

Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. The text of the Responsorium O magnum mysterium, to be sung liturgically in the midnight darkness, describes the mystery of Christ's incarnation, from darkness into light. In three sections, the music increases from a piano sound to the concluding Halleluja. In ever-new harmonies, the lyrical-Gregorian motifs emerge in sequences of sixths within the dense, four-part writing. The musical language is modal-harmonic with constantly surprising turns. This highly atmospheric piece is good to sing, but requires a reasonably-sized choir because the work doesn't give the voices any opportunity to rest.

Jubilate’s main theme comes from the Gregorian chant on the Psalm Jubliate Deo omnis terra. The work itself was inspired by the sacredhistory of the Waldkirch (a forest village) community, located on the Swiss/German boarder. For the moving moment in the Good Friday liturgy, when the priest symbolically washes the feet of several people thereby recalling the thoughtful, loving gesture of Christ at the Last Supper, the Christian church provides a specially intimate, conciliatory text in the antiphon Ubi caritas. Matsushita's composition sets this text quite simply to reflect this moment in a beautiful motet, which is both charming and grateful to sing. In an entirely tonal setting in F major, with chromatic accents sparingly employed, he uses elements from organum and pedal points to create tonally atmospheric expanses contrasting with the syllabic setting which runs throughout. In his writing he uses unisons, thirds and contrary motion, spanning quasi-Gregorian melodies. Matsushita sets the three verses of the hymn usually set nowadays, and these also divide the composition.
