I have an obsession with the poetry of William Carlos Williams (1883-1963). In the spring of 2016, I was re-reading his Collected Works and was struck by a line in his poem The Well Disciplined Bargeman. The bargeman is carefully rowing over the murky water and then under the Presence. Whatever there is else is moving. Having plucked my title from WCW's poem, I have attempted to capture that same sensation of attention being given to what is not in the foreground. The pitch material is fairly simple: steps going down. The goal is for the listener (and especially the performers) to notice what cannot be notated. String Quartet (1985) - In memoriam Urmas Kibuspuu. This impressive two-movement string quartet by the popular young Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur (b. 1959) displays minimalist influences. The most pronounced ostinato tendencies are in the first violin, which repeats the same motif for several bars while the other instruments accompany it with their own recurring motifs. Released on the BIS label, the quartet is dedicated to the memory of a friend of Tuur's, the Estonian actor Urmas Kibuspuu.

Jason Eckardt: Although connections between the American sculptor Richard Serra's monolithic, post-minimalist works and my music may not be immediately apparent, I seek to convey in sound the simultaneous imposition and precariousness that I perceive in his pieces. Serra's sculptures overwhelm the observer with their massive dimensions and sharply defined form. At the same time, they appear as if they might, with the slightest disturbance, collapse. As Serra's work disrupts the observer's sense of physical balance, After Serra similarly intends to undermine the listener's sense of temporal stability. My composition attempts to thwart expectations of formal and gestural continuity, juxtaposing a volatile and restless surface with steadily unfolding underlying processes..
