It has bold brass fanfare figures over textural woodwinds to start and then takes the listener on a sonic journey through a variation of harmonic colors, tambural and textural shifts.Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections. The first, a rather celebratory and triumphant fanfare in Bb major begins with the upper woodwinds and percussion creating a sound-screen, that is a busy texture consisting of a flurry of repeated notes over which the horns and alto saxophones present the opening theme. The sound-screen should be carefully balanced and give way to the melody at m. 5, which should be played extremely marcato. The timpani solo beginning in m. 11 must not be understated. A brief percussion interlude separates a restatement of the opening theme, this time with the addition of the trumpet, tenor saxophone, and euphonium, and a counter melody by the low winds. The percussion interlude is playful, light, but full of vigor and energy. An Ab in the low winds pulls the harmony towards G minor in m. 40 to start the second section, a more serious fanfare. Here, the marimba repeats an ostinato that is complemented by the bass drum and woodblock. The upper woodwinds with the xylophone and snare drum dance over the stern secondary fanfare. A longing call lead by the trombones, interrupted by a subtle snare drum beckons to the clarinets and horn who begin the third section of the piece at m. 68. This haunting melody in C minor is legato, and starkly contrasts all which came before it. A relentless concert tom-tom played with hard mallets keeps the momentum persistent, and a heartbeat-like pulse is felt from the tuba and baritone saxophone. The melody rises towards m. 84 when the brass harken back to the fanfare style before fading back into another lush woodwind strain.A recapitulation of the low winds’ call is heard at m. 100 which in this occasion intensifies into an emphatic statement by the battery percussion instruments. Now in Eb major, the opening fanfare theme is heard again once more before fading into the beginning of the piece’s conclusion.To end, the counter melody from the opening section duels with chromatic tension above before swelling to an arrival in the original key of Bb major. The full ensemble celebrates the piece’s resolution, and after a few crunchy power chords the journey is completed.

The recital was performed by the three piccoloists from the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras: Rosamund Plummer (SSO), Andrew Macleod (MSO), and me (ASO).When searching for a final piece that we could all play together as a trio, I came up a little short. Who would have guessed there would be so little repertoire for three piccolos? Thus the idea for Piccolo Ridicolo was born – a celebratory and humorous collaboration for three piccolos, with much debt and apologies owed to Rossini, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more.Thank you Andrew and Rose for being my first guinea pigs, my ASO flute colleagues for various road tests, my sister Maria Grenfell for her initial typesetting, and my mentor Leone Buyse for encouraging me to seek publication of the piece.

Commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra of Duluth, Minnesota, this work honors the life and legacy of one if its own members, James Stellmaker, who enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a public school music educator in Duluth. In contrast to a typical elegy, Twin Ports Overture has a celebratory feel, sparkling and colorful. Brass is prominent in many parts of the work, especially featuring Mr. Stellmaker's instrument, the trombone. The well-known hymn Praise Ye the Lord, The Almighty, which was played at his memorial service, is featured prominently throughout the work.

Golden Winds was commissioned by Jugendblasorchester Schramberg, Germany, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012. They gave the premiere, conducted by Andreas Hirt, at their Christmas concert that year.The work opens with a nervously energetic theme in the lower woodwinds, which is developed in canon and builds to climax for the whole band. The mood subsides to introduce a meditative section featuring first the clarinets and then a rich, chorale-like theme which grows into a passionate tutti. This then leads to the main body of the piece, a rhythmic vivo, which introduces its main theme quietly before it is taken up by the full band. A brief bridge passage thenintroduces a muscular second subject which develops until the bridge passage reappears to lead to a repeat of the main theme. This is transformed to herald a return of the opening bars of the piece, which now bring the work to a celebratory close. Golden Winds werd geschreven in opdracht van het Jugendblasorchester Schramberg uit Duitsland, dat in 2012 zijn vijftigjarig bestaan vierde. Het orkest bracht het werk in premiere tijdens het kerstconcert van het jubileumjaar, onder leiding van dirigent Andreas Hirt.De compositie begint met een koortsachtig, energiek thema in het lage hout. Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundusâ€, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair! Canticum Honoris Americorum, a nonet for brass, is gratefully dedicated to the American Brass Quintet. This legendary ensemble was one of the very first touring brass quintets, and the ensemble for which I wrote three of my brass quintets. Over the years, there have been several legendary players who performed with the ensemble, hence the inclusion of Past, Present, and Future in the dedication. Canticum was premiered at Julliard by the American Brass Quintet, along with four of their graduating students. Hence, a brass quintet with an additional trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba. The work is entirely celebratory in spirit--full of life and energy; virtuosic, fanfare-like musical gestures; and a feeling of joy throughout. The American Brass Quintet has recorded Canticum Honoris Americorum on their 2017 CD Perspectives, on Summit Records. -Eric Ewazen.
