Although almost unanimously condemned by contemporary Parisian critics for its overt sexuality and graphic final scene Carmen ultimately reached the public in a way that perhaps no other opera has. Bizet's aim (with Meilhac and Halevy who wrote the libretto) had been to transform the flaccid moralistic bourgeois genre of opéra comique into a more sophisticated type of staged work and he seems to have suceeded in Carmen. Each character has a musical significance and a unique expressive idiom the ultimate example being the dangerous exotic sensual Carmen herself depicted by an exotic and sinewy chromatic motive that also implies the insurmountable power of fate. Ina classic plot device she is contrasted with the 'good girl' of the opera Micaela whose main aria is set in the ternary form of the elevated bel canto French Grand Opera aria to imply her traditionally 'ladylike' retiring nature. Don José's musical styles reflect different levels in his descent from dutiful soldier to the underworld of obsession. With its famous arias and ensembles Aida has become one of the most popular operas ever written. The libretto was prepared by Antonio Ghislanzoni based on a text by French author Camille du Locle. and the plot is asfollows: At the court of the Pharaoh a captain of the guard Radames is in love with the slave-girl Aida. Her mistress is the Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris who covets Radames for herself. Unbeknownst to all Aida isactually an Ethiopian princess daughter of Egypt’s worst enemy King Amonasro. When Ethiopia declares war on the Nile Radames is delighted to be made Commander of the Egyptian army whereas Aida is torn between her love forRadamès and for her native land. The Egyptians are victorious and all go to the city gates where a celebration is taking place as captured Ethiopians follow the victors into the city. Among them is Amonasro Aida's father whosignals her not to betray his identity. At a plea from Radamès he is not executed but is taken into custody and the King offers Radames Amneris' hand in marriage.Amonasro finding Aida homesick and lovelorn forces hisdaughter to agree to ask Radamès where the Egyptian army plans to enter Ethiopia. This she does and just as he reveals the secret Amonasro steps out of hiding and Ramfis and Amneris come forth from the temple. While Aidaescapes with her father Radamès surrenders to the priests and is condemned as a traitor. He is sealed in a tomb to die but Aida has waited for him there and they die together.This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in the original Italian with an English translation by Walter Ducloux.

German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s 1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales Of Hoffmann. The opera was an immediate success and saw 101 nights of performance in its opening year in Paris with subsequent premieres all over the world Geneva Budapest Berlin London New York Mexico Buenos Aires and many more.

Following the universal success of his dance music Johann Strauss turned his attention to operetta. Die Fledermaus was one of his finest efforts in which he created a sparkling masterpiece that premiered to instant acclaim onthe Vienna stage in 1874.Alfred is still in love with the Rosalinde now the wife of Gabriel von Eisenstein and tries to serenade her. Rosalinde resists but melts on hearing his high A. The suitor leaves as Eisensteinarrives from court: he has been sentenced to a fortnight in jail for a civil offence. Falke a friend slips in and invites Eisenstein to a masquerade so he can accumulate pleasant memories before his confinement in jail.Rosalinde receives the ardent Alfred but their tête- -tête is interrupted by the warden Frank who mistakes Alfred for the man he has come to arrest. Rosalinde persuades Alfred to save her name by posing as her husband and Frankcarts him off to jail. In an antechamber at the palace Rosalinde arrives disguised as a Hungarian countess and is soon wooed by her own husband whose pocket watch she steals to hold as proof of his philandering.Champagne flows and the guests dance wildly until dawn. When the clock strikes six Eisenstein staggers off to keep his appointment at the jail. Frank arrives at the prison still giddy with champagne. Hearing someone atthe door he admits Eisenstein who has come to begin his sentence. The new prisoner is surprised to learn his cell is already occupied by a man who claims to be Eisenstein and who was found supping with Rosalinde! Rosalindeherself then hurries in to secure Alfred's release and press divorce charges against her husband. Enraged Eisenstein accuses his wife of promiscuity at which Rosalinde whips forth the watch she took from him at the ball. All ispronounced to have been a joke and Orlofsky and his guests celebrate the reconciliation of Rosalinde and Eisenstein. This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in English only.

The libretto for this work by playwright Henri Meilhac and journalist Philippe Gille is based on L'histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost. Retaining the novel's eighteenth-century setting Massenet's opera offers noisy crowd scenes passionate duets and tense melodramas which certainly pleased the Opera-Comique's patrons - it was an instant popular success. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English version by George and Phyllis Mead.

'Trial by Jury' opened at the Royalty Theatre on March 25 1875 and was exceptionally well received. Gilbert's absurd plot concerns Angelina who sues Edwin because he broke their betrothal and fell for another girl. Angelina must persuade the court that her loss has been immense but Edwin tries to convince the Jury he would be a worthless husband. The Judge falls in love first with a bridesmaid then with Angelina whom he marries. Realistic sets and bridal costumes hint at the irony of the farce that here there is no real love. ‘Yeomen of the Guard’ is a more ‘serious’ Gilbert and Sullivan opera and this perhaps accounts for its original lukewarm reception as it ran contrary to audience expectation. Set in the Tower of London in the sixteenth century the libretto concerns a jester Jack Point and his girl Elsie who plot to aid a war hero who is sentenced to die in the Tower. That hero Colonel Fairfax has been condemned to die by a relative who stands to inherit his fortune. Fairfax wants to marry someone just before his execution so that his bride will inherit instead. Jack sets Elsie up to marry Fairfax thinking it will do no harm. However Fairfax escapes and remains in the area in disguise. Hespots Jack trying to woo Elsie and gives a demonstration of the proper way to woo winning Elsie's affections himself. In the end everyone pairs off except Jack who loses Elsie to Fairfax and is heartbroken. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score containing all the dialogue and edited by Edmond W. Rickett.
