The many sided and productive Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) is knwon as a composer of dance music sacred music and music for the advent and Christmas time. He worked as Kapelmeister to the court at Wolffenbuttel but he was also asked to serve in other places includin Dresden. Praetorius was valued for the new impulses he gave to music by means of his use of instrumental accompaniment. His main contribution is his theoretical work 'Syntagma Musicum' one of the most important musical refernce books in connection with instruments and instrumentation in the early 17th Century. 'Es ist ein ros entsprungen' is a well known ancient melody which has inspired numerous composers andarrangers througout the Centuries. Otto M. Schwarz has made a choral arrangement.

A Bandsman’s Overture was commissioned by British Bandsman magazine to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2012. It was premiered by Black Dyke Band conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs at a special anniversary concert held in Symphony Hall Birmingham on July 1st.British Bandsman was for a period known as British Bandsman and Contest Field following an amalgamation of two magazines. The then owner John Henry Iles celebrated this new title by commissioning Ord Hume to write the famous march BB & CF. As a salute to this heritage A Bandsman’s Overture starts with the four notes B(b)-B(b)-C-F a motive which permeates an opening fanfare which contrasts a busy opening with a more legato central section. This gives way to a bustling Vivo based on repeated staccato notes. A change of key heralds a central cantabile melody first on euphoniums and baritone and then played by the full band which is followed by a short development section. This leads to a transformed reprise and a return of the opening fanfare decorated this time by florid muted cornets.

The Swedish supergroup ABBA had great success in the seventies and eighties until they split in 1982. I Have a Dream from the album Voulez Vous was one of their largest hits with its fantastic warm sentimental Italian style melody.

This composition in two parts is one of the first successful works Jacob de Haan published for Brass Band. Somewhat under the influence of Ted Huggen’s Choral and Rock Out which was an overwhelming success at the time the still very young Jacob de Haan wrote this composition. The first part (Air) exists of a choral melody with baroque grace notes supported by a pop rhythm in the drums. The second part (Crazy Music) is a swinging bossa nova in which various instrument groups present themselves in the continuously varying themes. The famous Black Dycke Mills Band contributed to the success of Crazy Music in the Air by regularly puttingthe piece on its tour programmes.

Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535. Add a majestic Baroque feel to any concert with this simple yet effective arrangement.

Monterosi est une commune italienne de la province de Viterbe dans la région du Latium en Italie. Cette composition éponyme est dédiée à l?Académie Musicale Francigena (Accademia Musicale Francigena) de Monterosi à l?occasion de la troisième édition du Concours « Tommaso Albani » un concours national pour Orchestres à Vent. La première a eu lieu sous la direction du compositeur. Jacob de Haan a été sollicité pour la troisième fois comme membre du jury et chef invité. Monterosi est une oeuvre solennelle aux accents lyriques. Jacob de Haan y révèle la palette sonore du Brass Band.

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

for Bb Flugel Horn (or Bb Cornet) and Brass Band-Belvedere is a beautiful solo for Flugel Horn or Cornet and is partly taken from City Scapes a concert work that was inspired by Central Park in New York City. The title Belvedere refers to ‘Belvedere Castle’ erected in 1869 and radiates the peaceful atmosphere of this place.

The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale.Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A) then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style followed by a fast dance in rock style. All this composed in a classical song structure: introduction verse bridge chorus shortened verse bridge chorus chorus.
