Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night) on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.Jacob de Haan maakte dit arrangement voor blaasorkest met eventueel een mannenkoor. Het originele kerstlied werd geschreven door de Oostenrijkse componist en organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). Stille Nacht componeerde hij op24 december 1818 in opdracht van de priester van de Sint Nikolaaskerk van Oberndorf, die de tekst voor dit lied zelf had geschreven. The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David, where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman, William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell<(I>, which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696, the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding. Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.Wir schlüpfen in die Haut von Miguel und reisen mit ihm nach Australien. Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. Citadel’s Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, “The Queen of Citadelsâ€, with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire.Citadel’s Destiny kan dienen als loopmars, maar is ook geschikt voor een concert. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van la Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. Een speciaal kenmerk: het is gemaakt volgens de conventionele voorschriften voor militaire marsen, maar dan met een moderne twist. De titel verwijst naar de door Vauban gebouwde citadel in Lille, ‘La Reine des Citadelles’, waarmee de band een lotsbestemming deelt. Deze mars wordt nog steeds uitgevoerd door la Musique de l’Infanterie, als onderdeel van het traditionele concertrepertoire.Citadel's Destiny ist ein Marsch, der sowohl im Konzert als auch bei einer Parade aufgeführt werden kann. The numerous, mostly religious works of the Bohemian composer Andreas Hammerschmidt are composed with great craftmanship, and sound full and catchy. They were composed for 17th century village churches, in which they were sung by the congregation—and they are still familiar and popular today. Robert van Beringen took the advent hymn Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates and created this beautiful arrangement. The music of the Caribbean is a mixture of styles encompassing traditions that reflect the nature of its many islands and ethnic groups which inherited a multitude of rhythms imported by slaves from West Africa. Europeans brought with them Western-style melodies and harmonies, still used today in Trinidadian calypso, a traditional folk genre which gained worldwide popularity thanks to internationally famous artists such as the American singer Harry Belafonte (Calypso, Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Fascinated by this music which embodies the very spirit of exoticism, Roland Kernen composed Caribbean Calypso, a composition with softly swaying rhythms whichfollow a gentle and subtle melodic line in a rum and cigar-flavoured atmosphere. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In questo arrangiamento firmato Jan de Haan, il corale è esposto a due riprese: dapprima preceduto da una breve introduzione seguita da una variazione tra ogni verso, in seguito in una trama continua che, fedele al sottotitolo originale, cerca nella sua azione la consolazione.

Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are stillpopular around the world today. Austrian composer and organist Franz Xaver Gruber composed the original version of this Christmas work in 1818. It is probably one of the most famous of all Christmas carols and should not be missed from any Christmas concert. American composer William Gordon has produced this arrangement for brass band. Das originale Weihnachtslied wurde vom österreichischen Komponisten und Organisten Franz Xaver Gruber am 24. Dezember 1818 im Auftrag des Priesters der Sankt- Nikolaus-Kirche von Oberndorf komponiert. Der Priester selbst verfasste den Text für dieses romantische Lied, das geprägt ist von der österreichischen Volksmusik und der italienischen pastoralen Musik. Stille Nacht ist das wohl bekannteste und am weitesten verbreitete Weihnachtslied überhaupt und darf bei keinem Weihnachtskonzert fehlen. Der amerikanische Komponist William Gordon richtete dieses Arrangement für Brass Band ein.
