Mariah Carey felt a disconnect between her own life and the lyrical content until she was convinced to sing the song and she amended parts of it herself to make it more personal turning it into the inspiring ballad it is today. The song has been re-recordedtwice with innumerable cover versions and its message even providing comfort to Barack Obama during the 2009 elections. It then had the somewhat unusual instrumentation of spinet flute and string quartet. In 2017 Gregson made a revision for performance and publication in a new version for upper voices and piano
