This setting uses the full range of allthe Voice parts.Composer Arthur Sullivan is known the world over for his operatic collaborations with W S Gilbert including H M S Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance among many others. But Sullivan was also a composer of manother works among them operas Orchestral works ballets and hymns and church pieces. He wrote most of his part songs unaccompanied songs for SATB usually before his partnership with Gilbert began.

From 1947 he was Organist at St Ansgars Kirches and later remained connected with the Catholic Church by working as an Organist. Clearly he is inspired by the Catholic liturgy and sees his great output of ecclesiastical music as a vocation and a great responsibility. For many years his work by inspired by Gregorian chant and was composed in church modes then inthe mid 1950’s he began to expand into modern bitonality and polytonality culminating in Il cantico delle creature in 1962/3 in which there was no conventional notation and no fixed pitch. After that Lewkovitch had somewhat of a hiatus later returning again to the inspirations of the mid1950’s.

Franz Schubert(1797-1828) was an Austrian composer working in the early Romantic era. First published in 1823 Die Nacht (D. 983c/Op. 17 No. 4) is scored for an unaccompanied four-part male chorus(TTBB) with words by Friedrich Wilhelm Krummacher. In this lyrical song Schubert cleverly uses the expressive nature of the upper male range to serenade the beauty of the night.

Victor Hely-Hutchinson (1901 - 1947) was a British composer who was born in South Africa. He was recognised at an early age as a musical prodigy and could sing notes by ear before he could talk. His setting of Old Mother Hubbard was written c.1912 while he was still a pupil at Heatherdown Prep School. It is well-known for being a parody of Handel’s operatic style. Old Mother Hubbard was arranged for TTBB male Voice chorus by J. Michael Diack and first published in 1932. A timeless and amusing classic it is sure to go down well with any audience!

James Cartwright Macy (c.1845-1918) was an American songwriter and composer. Born in New York City he spent most of his life living and working in Cleveland. He wrote dozens of popular songs and pieces for the Piano as well as hymns and anthems. He also wrote under several pseudonyms meaning that a large proportion of his work could presently be unattributed to him.Little Tommy Went A-Fishing is possiblyMacy’s best-known work today. It is presented here for TTBB male voice chorus with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. A version for SATB choir is available in a separate edition.

Offenbach was a French composer of German origin and was with Johann Strauss (ii) one of the two composers of outstanding significance in popular music of the 19th century. His 'Gendarmes' is written for TTBB.

The idea for the Sailors’ Chorus came to Wagner in 1839 aboard ship in the safety of a fjord after having fled from a storm at sea. The chanting of the crew as it echoed off the fjord’s granite cliffs inspired the composer to create this Chorus with its accented rhythms.The Sailors' Chorus is scored for men’s Chorus TTBB.
