Who says bass instruments never get the melody? This classic march – and please forgive the ungrammatical title – gives the melody to the basses all the way through! Perhaps no other march is better suited to the Build-A-Band flex/limited instrumentation format. Them Basses is a guaranteed hit for musicians and audiences alike. Outstanding!

UPC: 038081453019. English. Traditional Folk Song based on the poem by Edgar Allan Poe.
Scored in a lilting three-quarter meter, this delicious melody, by an unknown composer, was originally scored to accompany Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name. The story is of the narrator's deep love for a woman who lived by the sea, and whose untimely death is mourned every night by the narrator as he sleeps next to her tomb by the ocean. The beautiful melody, charismatically harmonized, musically depicts that undying love and provides a meaningful opportunity to teach expressive and lyrical performance. A charming addition to the developing band repertoire. (2:15) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Based on clusters of sound and an unrelenting rhythmic drive, the music was imagined after the composer's home was hit by lightning. The work has an urgency about it that is juxtaposed with brief moments of release before tension builds once again. Percussion plays a big role throughout and a modular twist occurs toward the end as the inexhaustible energy moves into a fiery conclusion.

An outstanding composition by Ed Huckeby that features rhythmic accompaniment rhythms in the third and fourth parts contrasted with simple, but musically effective first and second part melodic lines. The slower middle section features a haunting melody in 3/4 time and is an excellent teaching tool for the legato style. Ed's arrangement for the Build-A-Band Series makes it playable with very small bands and bands with severe instrumentation issues and insures that it will be a favorite concert and contest selection for years to come for these groups. As usual with this series, optional parts are included for Percussion and piano.
About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Rondo from Incidental Suite is the third movement of this suite originally scored for concert band. This work is rhythmically engaging from beginning to end as the percussion establish the rhythmic motives that move and transform throughout. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as thirteen musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound. *The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Buckeye Rondo was commissioned by the Ohio State University for their annual middle school honor band festival. Composer Larry Clark used this opportunity to write a piece in a rondo form, but with some modern twists. The main theme is very catchy, and is used in various harmonic treatments and style. The episodes of the rondo as is common, increase in length and diversity as the piece develops. What a great way to introduce this form to young bands, and on top of that, the piece is infectious and expertly scored to make your band sound their best.

Solo Trombone, Band parts - picc, 2fls, 2 obs, EH, 2bsns, 3 cls, bcl, 2asx, tsx, bsx, 4 hns, 3 tpts, 3 tbns, euph, tba, timp, 3 perc Duration: 17' Composed: 2013 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC …the audience loved Red Dragonfly. Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Difficulty Level: Trombone 6 (Professional) Band 5 (Advanced) See also Red Dragonfly, Sonata for Trombone and Piano for the version with piano accompaniment. See composer website for audio sample. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band’s history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concertwork! Spectral Landscapes is a work for concert band that captures the grandeur, beauty, and energy of the American northwest with its mountains, rivers, and coast. The piece unfolds in two large sections, first slow, then fast. A bold fanfare gesture leads to a stunning lyrical theme before giving way to an aggressive uptempo section. This piece climaxes with a return of the slow theme in the faster tempo. Well done Sean!

Combining unique melodic lines with modal harmonies gives the opening of this new work a very mysterious and unique quality. Alternating between haunting, sustained chords and exciting melodic lines, this work features great contrasting styles and exciting percussion. These elements provide an outstanding musical framework for a piece which gives the illusion of being more difficult than it really is. Outstanding teaching tool which will also make a great contest or concert selection.

An ecossaise, derived from the French word for Scottish, was a dance that was very popular in Europe in the early nineteenth century. Beethoven was enamored with the music of the British Isles, and composed this work in 1810; though he withheld it from publication, it was published posthumously. Beethoven's humor and playfulness abound in this delightful arrangement for young players. (1:35).
