Animaux minute, ce sont 60 pièces très courtes (1 à 2 minutes) pour flûte seule, initialement composées pour la clarinette, et pensées pour accompagner un élève dès le début de son apprentissage, et tout au long de sa progression jusqu'aux niveaux les plus avancés. Ce n'est pas une méthode d'apprentissage, mais une série de 'vignettes', dans lesquelles on pourra choisir un morceau pour une audition, un examen... ou juste pour le plaisir. Au fil des morceaux apparaissent çà et là des éléments particuliers du langage musical. Par exemple, et dès la première page, on trouvera des appoggiatures brèves, et aussi une portée sans indication de mesure... Plus loin une note piquée, une syncope, puis deux... Tiens, un quintolet, tiens, un trille... Là, une cadence, un do bémol... donc ça existe ? Il faut croire ! Et plus loin, un Flatter... quoi ? Ah ? Ici on joue à la croche, plus tard on jouera à la blanche, à la blanche pointée... Ces petites découvertes sont distillées une par une, 'tranquillamente', couche après couche, et elles sont là non pas comme un simple prétexte d'exercice, mais parce qu'elles sont nécessaires à la musique. Les animaux proposent souvent leur rythme, leur chant, leur activité frénétique ou lente ; il y a leur milieu (l'eau, l'air qui ondulent...), leur localisation (l'Orient, l'Afrique et leurs parfums...); autant de pistes que j'ai pu suivre comme sources d'inspiration. Tout ce petit monde, tous ces petits mondes organisent le temps, le remplissent et le vident. Et organiser le temps, ne serait-ce pas ça, la musique ? Nous sommes principalement des tubes où passent des aliments, avec quelques appendices autour pour organiser la collecte desdits aliments. for flute and piano- Susan Milan discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th century Flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. These beautifully crafted works are all without exception a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme. Wilhelm Popp studied with the great Louis Drouet in the 1850s and wrote many charming works forthe Flute this among them. Susan Milan acclaimed soloist and teacher has edited this elegant edition. Replaces the old edition HE35 from Hunt Edition. First published in Hamburg in 1888. In editing the Sonatinas Susan Milan has tidied some of the articulation making the Flute part consistent. Discrepancies between markings in the Flute and Piano part have been corrected. She has occasionally added some slurs where the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced and staccati have been added where it appears to have been missing. On the whole expression marks have not been added or changed original markings.

Based On The Etudes Of Franz Wilhelm Ferling-Master flautist Amy Porter has reworked the famous etudes of Cyrille Rose for Flute allowing students of the instrument to reap the rewards of pieces that have benefited clarinettists for generations. The second of the Deux Morceaux “2. Les Écureuils” is a lovely short piece composed by Henri Busser. Really different from the '1. The swans' this piece is much more cheerful and slightly faster. It is perfect to work on the flexibility of the tone and good training to be able execute more challenging pieces. Starting in D major the piece has a ternary form (ABA) with a beginning in Staccato a slower B part and the repeat of the initial theme for the end. The most difficult part of this piece will be found in the last two measures with really fast notes to play. It will be necessary to start toplay them at a slower tempo to get the perfect technique and then increase the speed. This work is preceded by “The Swans” with a difficulty rated at 5°. Henri Busser (1872-1913) is a French classical composer and Organist. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a member of the Académie française. He wrote a ballet numerous operas and chamber music.

Composer's NoteNarcissus wanders through the forest observing enjoying ... unselfconscious but self-absorbed.He sees as pool of water and then as he approaches notices his reflection in the water. He is intrigued and then jumps back in fright. Once more he approaches ... it is still there. Narcissus steps away from the pool to consider this phenomenon. Several times he approaches the figure is always there watching him.In the shimmering sunlight Narcissus seems to see this glorious and attractive being moving in the rippling water. He is dazzled and slowly holds out his arms. To his amazement the figure responds.In awe and wonder Narcissusapproaches closer and closer. With a sudden change of mood Narcissus dances happily and playfully ... the figure echoing him. But then Narcissus begins to question anxiously the lack of any independent response...is he being mocked? He gets more and more aggitated and finally in a fury he rushes headlong into the water to grapple with the figure. The waves surge up and Narcissus is drowned. There is a distant shimmering vision of Narcissus and his reflection. Then in the setting sun the vision disappears the forest is empty and the pool lies undisturbed.Thea Musgrave
