Pride of the Forest verklankt de trots die verbonden is aan de volksaard van de mensen die wonen in de Friese Wouden (de Fryske W lden), een streek in het noordoosten van Friesland. Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine, the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The results can be heard in this delightful and unusual work.

Everest is de naam van een restaurant op de veertigste verdieping van een wolkenkrabber in Chicago. Jacob de Haan liet zich daar inspireren door de voortreffelijke keuken, het magnifieke uitzicht op de skyline en de bijzonder aangenamesfeer. Dit werk is een prachtige hommage aan Chicago en aan de chef-kok van Everest.

Everest ist der Name eines Restaurants im 40. Stock eines Wolkenkratzers in Chicago. Jacob de Haan ließ sich dort von der ausgezeichneten Küche, dem wundervollen Ausblick auf die Skyline und von der angenehmen Atmosphäre inspirieren und schrieb diesen Marsch. Eine Hommage an die Stadt und den Restaurantchef, wie man sie sich passender nicht vorstellen kann.

The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody, the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

Stephen Bulla schreef Firestorm, waarvan de première op 27 april 1991 plaatsvond, voor de United States Army Band. De hevige emoties die de Eerste Golfoorlog bij de componist losmaakte, vormden voor hem de aanleiding tot het schrijven van deze compositie. Hypnotiserende geluiden van bombardementen voeren de boventoon in dit spannende werk, dat in de vorm van een rapsodie werd geschreven.

From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly ‘ancient times’ while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!

From Ancient Times is een mijlpaal in het oeuvre van Jan Van der Roost. Doorgaans vinden zijn werken hun oorsprong veelal in de Vlaamse vocaalpolyfonie uit de renaissancetijd. Maar met gregoriaans gezang en middeleeuwse dansen grijpthij nu terug naar nog eerdere tijden. De basis voor dit grootse werk mag dan in ‘ancient times’ liggen, de toonspraak is dat zeer zeker niet..!

From Ancient Times ist ein Meilenstein in Jan Van der Roosts Oeuvre, das vor allem von der Musik aus der Zeit der flämischen Vokalpolyphonie inspiriert ist. Mit gregorianischen Reminiszenzen und einem mittelalterlichen Tanz wird jedoch auch auf noch ältere Musik zurückgegriffen: Grundlage dieses großartigen Werkes sind wahrlich alte Zeiten (ancient times), die Tonsprache hingegen ist vorwiegend modern.

La trame s’appuie sur quelques principes et techniques d’écriture caractéristiques de cette école qui a profondément transformé la musique occidentale. On y trouve également des réminiscences grégoriennes et une danse médiévale, mais le langage sonore reste essentiellement moderne. From Ancient Times est un sublime hommage aux maîtres des temps anciens.

La trama si appoggia su principi e tecniche di scrittura caratteristici di questa scuola che ha profondamente trasformato la musica occidentale. Si colgono anche reminescenze gregoriane e una danza medioevale, ma il linguaggio sonoro resta moderno. From Ancient Times è un omaggio ai grandi maestri dei tempi antichi.
