The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami such as the island of La Palma one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America where it may reach 50km inland destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted broken off suddenly followed by silence suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After nature’s force has spent itself resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

The Odyssee tells the story of Odysseus the undaunted hero. In times long ago the blind poet Homer wrote this famous epic. The 'Odyssey' follows the 'Iliad' the story of the bloody war between the Greek and the Trojans. This battle endsafter ten years thanks to the Odysseys famous trick. the Trojan Horse. The Odyssey is not a war epic but a story about perseverance loyalty adventure and the survival instinct of its ingenious hero. In The Odyssey Homer describes howOdysseus the king of Ithaca had to endure another ten years of affliction after the ten years of war in Troy before he could finally return to his home land. During those years his wife Penelope had to try and keep her many admirers away.These men not only wanted het hand but also the kingship. To prove her husbands worth she played a trick: 'As soon as I have finished weaving this shroud for my father-in-law Laertes I will choose one of you to become my husband' she promisedthem. But during the night she secretly loosened what she had woven during the day prolonging the time until Odysseus would finally return. After twenty long years when he finally stood at the door she wondered: Is this really my husband? Ishe an imposter? Cunningly she asked him to move the bed because only she and her husband know that the bed was immovable and was build around an old three trunk! Odysseus was deeply moved: this really was his wife his Penelope! Nearly threethousands years later the loyalty and strength of this character and all the dangerous adventures that Odysseus survived thanks to courage and intelligence still moves us today. Odyssee by Jan Bosveld is not just an adventure story butrather a characteristic piece in which memories of Homers story can be heard. The composition opens with a firm stirring theme describing our hero Odysseus in detail: This man is not to be taken lightly. The further development of thisshort introduction completes this character sketch: trustworthy perseverant and a genius. After that we can picture Odysseus on the lonely beach of Ogygia. Do the trumpets depict his memories of the war of Troy? Does he think of his wife as werecognise the weaving loom of Penelope in the murmuring eighth? In the solemn plaintive part that follows we can imagine Penelope feeling lonely sitting in the womens room with her servants.One of the girls plays the harp but that does notclear the sombre atmosphere. Then we can imagine seeing the sorceress Circe who changed Odysseus men into swine. After she gives a simple magic sign something follows that reminds us of the sound of pigs grunting. Then the Odysseus theme resounds:the hero comes to savi his comrades. Assisted by Hermes he forces Circe to lift the spell. The piece ends the same way as it began with an animated theme: Odysseus is still the same undefeated and not to be taken lighty!

Il pourrait paraître surprenant qu?un ensemble japonais puisse commander une pièce pour orchestre de fanfare puisque l?on rencontre surtout ce type de formation en Belgique aux Pays-Bas et au Luxembourg ainsi qu?en France et en Suisse. Senzoku Gakuen l?une des plus grandes et plus prestigieuses académies de musique du Japon compte une grande variété d?ensembles et d?orchestres. En 2006 s?y est ajouté un orchestre de fanfare fondé par Sotaru Fukaishi un professeur d?euphonium qui pensait qu?il était nécessaire d?offrir de plus larges possibilités aux cuivres de la région. Depuis qu?il avait assisté au World Music Contest de Kerkrade (Pays-Bas) plusieurs années auparavant Fukaishi se prit de passion pour le son chaud et généreux de l?orchestre de fanfare une formation atypique au Japon. Jan Van der Roost a favorablement adhéré à cette nouvelle initiative tandis que Manu Mellaerts collabora avec les deux hommes afin de concrétiser certains projets. Le professeur Kazuo Tomioka doyen du collège de musique soutint vigoureusement l?orchestre et commanda Ostinati. La création de l?oeuvre fut donnée le 11 juin 2011 au Maeda Hall de Mizonokuchi (Kawasaki) où se trouve Senzoku Gakuen. La pièce débute avec un impressionnant solo de timbales précédant l?entrée des cuivres et des saxophones. La pulsion rythmique est constante la musique est énergique et de caractère affirmé. Une mélodie pentatonique émerge graduellement alors que la trame musicale diminue d?intensité et s?adoucit. L?ostinato à la percussion revient fréquemment et la première partie de l?oeuvre se termine dans un climat semblable à celui du début. Le deuxième mouvement doux et romancé débute avec un long passage en mode mineur joué par les saxophones. Le même thème apparaît alors en mode majeur et se développe peu à peu ; la musique s?intensifie pour arriver à un majestueux et orchestral forte dont les sonorités rappellent celles d?un orgue d?église. Puis le thème revient à sa tonalité mineure d?origine avec un changement d?instrumentation qui mène

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the sceneof action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appearsto be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen from neighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upperchamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some ofthem sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played byminstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

As a trumpet player André Waignein has composed many pieces for this instrument; extremely electrifying pieces meant for young trumpet-players and more demanding works for professionals.With his rhapsody André Waignein wanted to compose a piece in which spontaneity dominates and in which the virtuosity sonority and style of the soloist is featured to its maximum. Although the piece is not one of the most difficult it nevertheless places high musical demands on the soloist. Following an impressive orchestral opening the soloist comes to the fore with long phrases followed by more dynamic and rhythmic passages. The second movement gives evidence of extreme sensitivity andoffers the soloist the opportunity to prove that the trumpet (flugel horn) can be a stirring and emotional instrument. The third movement is the most spectacular. The orchestra actively participates with increasingly delicate interventions. The soloist can display all the possibilities offered to him by his instrument. With a long sostenuto on the trumpet (flugel horn) the beautiful rhapsody ends.

L?intrigue de l?histoire est basée sur le roman de l?écrivain français Gaston Leroux. Le personnage principal (Le Fantôme de l?Opéra) est un être étrange défiguré et masqué qui vit et hante les sous-sols de l?Opéra de Paris. Son amour obsessionnel pour la jeune cantatrice Christine le pousse à promouvoir sa carrière à tout prix. De compositie 'Drachten' werd geschreven in opdracht van de gemeente Smallingerland ter gelegenheid van de Nederlandse Fanfare Kampioenschappen 2004 in Drachten. Het werk beeldt de merkwaardige tweedeling uit van de Drachtster bevolking. De inwoners van de gemeente Smallingerland en de plaats Drachten in het bijzonder zijn kleurrijk van samenstelling. Ongeveer de helft van de bewoners onderstreept het socialistische gedachtegoed terwijl de andere helft meer de conventionele christelijke partijen steunt. Muzikaal gezien leidde dit gegeven tot de keuze voor twee thema's met vrije variaties over deze thema's: enerzijds psalm 1 een melodie met onbekende herkomst uit het Liedboek der kerken en anderzijds de Internationale een melodie die geschreven werd door Adolphe de Geyter en die vooral het oude socialisme symboliseert. Beide melodieën strijden om de eer in een afwisselende rapsodische compositie die de vele mogelijkheden en kleuren van de fanfare voor het voetlicht brengt. Het werk bestaat uit vier geledingen met elk een eigen karakter. Het vierde gedeelte grijpt tegen het slot terug op de eerste episode. De twee thema's worden met compositorische virtuositeit in kleine motiefjes sierlijke lijnen en stoere melodieën naar voren gebracht. Daarmee worden de twee hoofdstromingen van de bevolking weergeven waarbinnen veel nuancering aanwezig is. De compositie werd geschreven als testpiece en is daarom een bijzonder uitdagend werk waarin alle groepen van het orkest hun aandeel hebben. Tegelijkertijd is het werk in een toegankelijk idioom geschreven zodat er voor de luisteraar meer te beleven valt dan enkel technisch vernuft.

Élaborée par Jan de Haan l?émission faisait découvrir aux téléspectateurs à travers un lieu ou une région particulière la grande diversité de la pratique musicale aux Pays-Bas. S?inspirant de ce programme couronné de succès Jan de Haan a rassemblé dans cette pièce en cinq mouvements courts (thème - boléro - rondo - intermezzo - thème) quelques-uns des plus grands moments musicaux.
