Vom Komponisten 1826 in einem unbeschwerten Sommer zwischen Gartenhaus und Geschwistern geschrieben, handelt es sich zweifellos um die populärste der Konzertouvertüren Mendelssohns.

Der renommierte Musikwissenschaftler Friedhelm Krummacher zeigt in der Einleitung, wie fein Mendelssohn die Motive und Themen miteinander verwoben hat. Er geht außerdem der Entstehung des Werkes nach, insbesondere einem mutmaßlichen ersten Entwurf, der als Faksimile im Anhang wiedergegeben ist.

Composer's Program Note Repertoire operas occationally have orchestral suites: Bits and pieces of overture interlude etc. tied upin a bouquet of 'schönste Tränen'. Contemporary opera usually wither after the first season so the focusis on getting people to come and have a sniff before it's too late. Consequently it seemed obvious to meto start making orchestral excerpts from my operas that are meant to be played before the premiere (andafter please); I call them 'opera trailers' when they're substantial enough to be considered independent works and 'opera demos' when they're relatively short and moreappetizer-ish. SNOW WHITE'S MIRROR is a full scale two act dramatic opera written for the Danish National Opera. The opera is a modern re-telling for grown-ups of the brothers Grimm's fairy tale: Snow White is a self-centered teenage narcissist and the villain of the opera; she ends up loosing everyone but herself either because she kills them or because they decide they can't stand being around her anymore. But apparently she's o.k. with that...The music is intended for a large audience: it's basically pop music done with all the craftmanship of aclassical composer who's equally at home with large scale symphonic form avantgarde technique opera singing - and modern pop. The Trailer is in three movements. It contains three sections of the opera; the prelude an interlude close to the beginning of the second act and the final scene but one. It's a gloomy sort of trailer starting out in grand title sequence style moving on to a decidedly odd piece where Snow White find her way to the dwarfs (who're creepy junkies doing pornography to get money to buy dope) and ending in kind of an eerie rejection mood: Everyone still alive walks out on Snow White singing 'skin as white as snow hands red with blood soul as black as ivory'.(NM 2010)

The challenge of correcting it has now been taken over by the editor Jonathan Del Mar. Par MAW NICHOLAS. The first performance of the opera Sophie's Choice was given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 7 December 2002, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, directed by Trevor Nunn. The Concert Suite from Sophie's Choice was written for the Peabody Institute. The first performance was given by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra with mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Healy, conducted by Hajime Teri Murai, at the Peabody Institute, Baltimore on 24 April 2004. Trompeten-Ouvertüre-The Overture in C major the so-called “Trumpet Overture” with its brass fanfare was composed in 1826 and a second version with considerable revisions was made in 1833 for performances in D?sseldorf and London.The Overture in C major was first published posthumously in 1867.Christopher Hogwood’s Urtext edition takes into account both Mendelssohn’s autograph now held in the Biblioth?que nationale in Paris which has two endings as well as the London manuscript copy made for the performance there in 1834; this manuscript contains three separate trombone parts in Mendelssohn’s hand. ?The newB?renreiter edition presents the work as found in Mendelssohn’s autograph for the first time. ?Christopher Hogwood also documents the development of the overture with facsimiles from the 1826 version. Johann Strauss the Younger (1825 - 1899) was a Viennese composer best known for his operettas and dance music especially his waltzes polkas and quadrilles. By the time his father died in 1849 he was already well-established as a renowned composer in his own right. The Annen Polka (Op. 117) was written for St Anne’s Festival in 1852 - an important public holiday in Vienna. Somewhat confusingly Struass Snr had also written a Polka for the same festival ten years earlier which is known by the same title. Struass Jnr’s Annen Polka has been arranged for Piano andschool/amateur Orchestra by Frank Naylor.

One-act play by Peter Kien-In September 1942 Viktor Ullmann was interned in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt where he composed the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis [The Emperor of Atlantis] on a libretto of Peter Kien a fellow prisoner in 1943.This opera was rehearsed by a chamber ensemble founded with the permission of the SS but its first performance was prohibited after the final rehearsal. The autograph of the score only survived because shortly before his deportation to Auschwitz in 1944 Ullmann handed it together with the libretto to a friend who was able to save both manuscripts at the end of the war.The opera is a parable of a cruel emperor whose senseless war isclaiming many lives. Death puts an end to the chaos by refusing his duty - now everyone lives for eternity. The king becomes disempowered but the people long for a release from the pain of life. Only the voluntary death of the emperor can restore death's original purpose. The libretto is a vigorous take on the Third Reich and more particularly the concentration camp of Theresienstadt through the means of a mystery play. The music with its numerous references to jazz and then current light music sometimes by direct quotation puts the composer in the role of political commentator following the tradition of topical opera in the 1920's.

Suk, Josef Meditation on the Old Czech Hymn St Wenceslas for String Quartet op. 35a Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian ?St. Wenceslas? hymn. The hymn?s message ? a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint ? was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. This first Urtext edition, prepared by the Suk scholar Zdenek Nouza, is published in two scorings, one for string quartet (BA 9583; study score TP 583) and another for string orchestra (BA 9584). Nuova edizione a cura di André Richard e Marco Mazzolini. The new edition of Luigi Nono?s Prometeo serves a twofold objective. First, it proposes to document the musical text as defined through the experience of the performances in which Nono took part. Second, it aims to provide performers and scholars with the necessary information relating to the performance practice of the voices, instruments, and electronics (data, programming schemes, instructions for the implementation of sonic treatments). The technical and performance-related material is preceded by an essay which illustrates the philosophical background of the work, as closely linked to its formal aspects. The edition avails itself of the text of the second, final version of Prometeo, performed for the first time in Milan at the Stabilimento Ansaldo (September-October 1985) and reprised in Frankfurt (Alte Oper, August 1987), Paris (Théâtre National de Chaillot, October 1987) and Berlin (Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonie, August 1988), with Nono at the Sound Direction. While the purpose of the edition is eminently practical, the specific nature of the work, combined with Nono?s own compositional approach, has made it necessary for the editors to access a number of sources, in order to accurately define the musical text. These include the autograph score supplied to the publisher and the printed copy that Nono used in all of the performances he took part in, the scores and parts used by the performers who worked with the composer, the work protocols of the Experimentalstudio of Freiburg (where Nono realized the live electronics part for Prometeo), the radio broadcast recordings of the performances in which Nono was directly involved. The concept of the edition owes much to André Richard?s extended experience realizing Prometeo, from the premieres of Venice (1984) and Milan (1985) up until 2015. He assumed a variety of roles in his plurennial involvement, from preparing the chorus and vocal soloists to leading the Sound Direction, to the design of the sonic space. As to the notation for the electronics of Prometeo, particular attention was devoted to solving the problem posed by the absence of a reference standard, as well as of specific indications in the autograph score. Based on the work protocols of the Experimentalstudio of Freiburg, the editors have developed a semiographic code that is coherent and expressive enough to avert stylistic ambiguities and, at the same time, open and flexible enough to allow for the exercise of interpretative freedom in a constantly evolving technological context.

Bärenreiter’s critical edition of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s “symphonic poem” overture Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage edited by Christopher Hogwood belongs to our series of seven overtures by the 19th century master. Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage is known today only in the version from 1834 and our new edition offers a critical edition of this version. But unknown to modern ears is an early version with an additional 50 bars of this overture from 1828 which only survives in a manuscript copy from the composer’s estate.
