Cradle Song-Vuggesang / Cradle Song for Organ solo by Peter Bruun (2016). The piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. Dedicated to Vibeke Vanggaard. 'Peter Bruun's cradle song Vuggesang is an inventive and refreshingly unconventional set of variations on 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. There are some fascinating textures here and the whole thing is a far cry from a dutiful neo-classical perusal of stock partita motifs - the crystalline final variation which disappears into nothing in the final bars is especially striking. Numerous rhythmic complexities throughout the score will need thought but the piece will reward thediligent.' - Stephen Farr Choir & Organ Magazine 'Organ music makes up only a small part of Danish composer Peter Bruun’s (b. 1968) varied output. Nonetheless  Vuggesang (‘Cradle Song’) from 2016 is idiomatically and sympathetically written for the organ: a series of five variations on Luther’s hymn Vom Himmel hoch that affords variety of texture colour and mood. A clear head is needed to negotiate some of the rhythmic complexities but this is a fine work for the Christmas season that will reward performer and listener.' - Sunday by Sunday

Christmas Carol Song begins as a slightly grand adaptation of American composer C B Hawley’s Christmas Cradle Song in a dotted 6/8 rhythm to which the Adeste Fideles is added. English Organist and composer Alfred Hollins was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Blind from birth Hollins was fortunate enough to attend the innovative Royal Normal College for the Blind outside London whose music-intensive curriculum suited his gifts. For more than forty years he was the Organist at the Free St George’s Church in Edinburgh and he travelled the English-speaking world repeatedly on concert tours.

The Clarinet Quintet in A K. 581 is Mozart’s only completed Clarinet Quintet. It was written in 1789 for the clarinettist of the Viennese Imperial Court Orchestra Anton Stadler and is often named after him. Originally written for Basset Clarinet and String quartet it has been arranged for many different ensembles since. It is one of the composer’s most admired works with its idyllic flowing melodies and sumptuous harmony making it one of the highlights of the classical era. The Larghetto is the second movement written in sonata form. It has been arranged for Organ by the Henry Coleman (1888-1965) who was organist at PeterboroughCathedral from 1921-1944. Published 1953.

Thomas Hewitt Jones' Carnival. Composed 2010. Written for Martin Neary President of the Organists Charitable Trust. These five short works are all extracted from the excellent Little Organ Book from the Organists Charitable Trust edited by Martin Neary and first published by Novello in 2010. This is a wonderful resource of 11 mainly new works by British composers all of moderate difficulty and well-defined character. Iain Farrington’s Bluesday is full of delicious harmonies with a bold climax framed by a gentle beginning and ending. David Bednall’s Fanfare is a joyful work that would bea good recital opener or festival voluntary with a chance to unleash the big reeds. The simplicity of the title of Howells’s Cradle Song belies a richness and warmth that make this a moving miniature. John Rutter’s evening prelude from 1979 on the plainsong hymn Te lucis ante terminum is tender and clear with some surprisingly plangent harmonies. Thomas Hewitt Jones’s Carnival is an outburst of festivity and bravura. All these pieces are very much worth playing though organists interested in more than two of them would be better served purchasing a copy of the original anthology which is still very well priced (Little Organ Book Novello 9781849386814 £9.95). - Sunday by Sunday

Finzi's small and select output sadly includes no original solo organ music but organists will find these arrangements by Robert Gower Alan Ridout and Philip Brunelle gratifyingly idiomatic and rewarding.

Par CAROL HENRI. La registration à l'orgue est une science et un art. Notre souhait serait d'éclairer et guider en premier lieu l'élève d'orgue : mais aussi celui qui aime cet instrument, soit au disque, soit au concert, soit - bien entendu - à l'église ou au temple, car c'est là, en fait, sa place privilégiée. Nous avons dit 'guider'. Devant une oeuvre d'art (dans un musée, par exemple), le guide suscite l'admiration pour telle oeuvre, tel détail - mais même (et surtout) s'il s'adresse à des connaisseurs, il s'en tiendra là et laissera à chacun le soin de partager (ou non) cette admiration. Le goût - qui suppose un choix - ne s'impose pas. Il se forme ! Que de fois avons-nous entendu dire à propos des jeux de mixtures : 'Qu'allez-vous faire de tous ces 'sifflets' (sic) ?', ou bien, à propos d'un orgue néo-baroque : 'La perfection d'harmonie de cet instrument permet de jouer Franck, Vierne et Messiaen !' Voire... C'est dire combien la registration à l'orgue est un sujet dans lequel il convient d'entrer... sur la pointe des pieds ! Sujet délicat entre tous. Noélie Pierront nous dit (dans L'Orgue, #100, p. 132) : 'Il me semble impossible d'aimer l'orgue sans essayer de rassembler une bibliothèque consacrée à notre instrument. De Dom Bedos aux jeunes contemporains, en passant par A. Pirro, F. Raugel, A. Cellier et leurs émules, que d'ouvrages passionnants, parfois rarissimes !' Depuis longtemps, en effet, les théoriciens se sont penchés sur le problème de la registration - qu'il nous suffise de citer : 1608 : Arte organica, Integnati 1613 : Melopeo, Cerone 1619 : Organographia, Praetorius 1636 : Harmonie universelle, Mersenne 1768 : Musica mechanica, Adlung 1766/1770 : L'art du facteur d'orgue, Dom Bedos, né à Caux-en-Biterrois. D'autres encore, dont les noms figurent dans la bibliographie, continuent aujourd'hui recherches ou synthèses en parlant de ces ouvrages de base. Des revues comme L'Orgue ou La Tribune de l'orgue - entre autres apportent régulièrement en leurs articles des éclairages nouveaux ou instructifs. Le côté 'facture' n'étant pas notre propos, nous nous sommes bornés à étudier l'essentiel du matériel sonore et des moyens mis à la disposition de l'organiste pour en tirer le meilleur parti. Maître des possibilités que lui offre la console et - bien entendu - maître de la technique et des styles d'interprétation indispensables à telle ou telle page (faire 'des pieds et des mains' ne suffit plus, il faut aujourd'hui 'jouer des coudes'), il peut ainsi redonner une 'vie sonore' aux notes de la partition. Sa science de la registration devient alors un art ! Pensé et écrit pour mes élèves, je dédie ce petit travail à M.
