Inspiring Nature These three piano pieces, composed for the ,,Concours, Brin d'Herbe 2019, may be performed separately or as a collection, in which case they should be played in the given order. Though each piece is aimed at a different technical level (I. Elementary, II. Advanced, III. Intermediate), they have a common artistic aim: to connect musical expression with poetic inspiration. In particular, these pieces meditate on the emotional connection between our interior life and the vast and varied landscapes of the natural world all around us. While composing I found myself re-reading Kathleen Raine (one of my favourite poets) and was struck by her statement (in the foreword to her ,,Selected Poems): ,,'Nature-poetry' is not what we write about nature, but rather the language of images in which nature daily speaks to us of the timeless, age-old mystery in which we participate. Nature communicates today what it told the earliest of humankind, and what it will tell future generations when our modern high-rise cities are no more. Meanings, moods, the whole scale of our inner experience, finds in nature the 'correspondences' through which we may know our boundless selves. Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all. What she says about nature resonates with my understanding of music, which also sometimes affords us an opportunity to know 'our boundless selves'. And I am especially interested in the way that sounds - which, as vibrations in the air, are another aspect of nature - can reveal and heighten our sense of connectedness to ourselves and our surroundings. Each movement is inspired by a single stanza from the poem ,,Amo Ergo Sum by Kathleen Raine, and I would encourage anyone playing these pieces to devote time to internalising the words as well as the music, for they may contain the key to an accurate expression. As such, the relevant words are quoted at the start of each score. ,,Inner Landscapes is dedicated to Joe Browning, Lexy Oliver and Omar Shahryar. Israeli pianist Tal Weissman was born in Haifa in 1972, and began his musical training at age four. While a youth, he performed as a soloist with most of the orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded an Outstanding Israeli Competitor at the Arthur Rubenstein Competition in 1992, and has won prizes in international piano competitions in Europe.In 1995, Weissman was accepted for piano studies with the internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Maria Curcio Diamand in London. During this period of study in London, he was awarded many prizes and performed in most of the major concert venues in England. In 1999, he made a concert tour of the United States.Tal Weissman returned to Israel in 2004, where he teaches piano privately and continues to perform both in Israel and abroad. His compositions for piano and other instruments express the human sprit as it faces the challenges of the world.

Commissioned by Marta Ptaszynska for the 1992 Bydgoszcz Percussion Symposium in Poland, Dorff’s concerto bears a secret program reflecting the proud strength of Polish Solidarnosc standing up to Soviet oppression. Lurking in the drama’s background were the ironies of Poland’s financial dependence on the USSR, and Dorff’s ancestry with Russian and Polish roots. The first movement was completed in August 1991, and an hour later Gorbachev was deposed by a coup; the remainder of the concerto was composed as the USSR fell. This glorious development for human freedom also meant the end of financial commitments from the USSR to its satellite countries, leading to the cancellation of the Bydgoszcz Festival. Percussionist Dean Witten premiered the work with the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony, conducted by Maestro Alan Gilbert, then in his 20s.

The three pieces that make up Quasis appear, at first glance, to have little in common, but nothing could be further from the truth. Although the dances and songaEURdances come from disparate parts of the world -- Poland, Austria, America -- and from different periods, Avi Schonfeld unifies them stylistically and brings them up to date through his own musical language. He also juxtaposes contrasting forms and compositional procedures -- songaEURdance versus danceaEURsong; intimate, introvert small-scale mazurka v. epic, extrovert waltz; improvisation v. more structured writing -- and in so doing portrays different human temperaments. His aim in 'Quasi Blues' was not so much to write a traditional blues number as to create a link between his own compositional idiom and the characteristic elements of the blues.

This collection of character pieces by Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish composers is a good illustration of the fact that there is plenty to discover in those areas of Europe that more rarely enjoy the limelight. Written in honor of the Béla Bartók centennial, MUSIQUE NOCTURNES is inspired by one of his most characteristic and original works, the fourth piece (by the same title), from the suite Out of Doors. Both pieces feature overlapping “night musics†– atmospheric cluster figures, sharply contrasting motifs suggesting nocturnal bird, frog, or insect sounds, and an element of human, folksong-like melody as Levinson alludes to the authentic Hungarian folksong, “Tiszán innen, Dunán túl.â€.This simple piece was written in 2015 as a birthday present for the composer’s wife, poet and fellow bird lover Nanine Valen, and is a distant sequel to Canons and Chorale, which he wrote for her in 1969. The ornithological character is an affectionate tribute as well to his teacher Olivier Messiaen. Tenderness is a study in sound. Though imperceptible, immaterial and ephemeral, tenderness provides sustenance for all humankind. We all need tenderness - yet many never receive it. Alternating in the work are different jingling and gossamer textures that gradually converge into timbral clouds before finally dispersing in a down-to-earth hymn.
