In the Silence of the Secret Night is a piano arrangement of Sergei Rachmaninoff?s setting of Afanasy Fet, taken from the composer?s song cycle Six Romances, Op. 4 (1890-93). The poem describes a fitful lover?s nocturnal yearning. This three-minute piece draws on pianist Kirill Gerstein?s idiomatic grasp of the composer?s music, transcribing the song in a way that recalls Rachmaninoff?s writing from the early 1900s. It makes for an ideal vignette in a recital programme or elegant encore, suitable for advanced players. For piano-Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka in the Ukraine on the 23rd of April 1891. Soon showing a talent for piano and composition by the time he was fourteen he was attending the St. Petersburg Conservatoire where he received extensive schooling inpiano harmony composition and conducting. Prokofiev was greatly interested in contemporary composers (Reger dIndy Debussy and Richard Strauss) and quickly made a name for himself with his revolutionary aesthetic language of great harmonic andrhythmic impact. His compositions were inspired by Symbolism and Futurism two artistic movements predominate at the time. Prokofiev attracted attention through his early works – the Etudes Op.2 and the Pieces Op. 3 and 4 – owing to his specialtechnique and percussive treatment of the piano (similar in some respects to Bartok) although he was also capable of rich melodic invention.Actually composed in 1907-08 before his Four Etudes for Piano Op. 2 Prokofiev’s Four Pieces for Piano Op. 3 and 4 were only published in 1911. Concert pieces some show Scriabin’s influence on the composer especially in the titles.

Pr?lude in c sharp minor op. 3 no. 2-Pr?lude C Sharp Minor Op.3 No.2 is possibly Sergei Rachmaninow's most famous late romantic Piano work and is now finally available as a Henle Urtext edition.First published in 1892 as part ofthe Piano cycle 'Morceaux de Fantaisie' Op. 3 the work soon became well known abroad in particular due to the concert tours given by the pianist Alexander Siloti Rachmaninow???s cousin. Even Rachmaninow himselfwas soon no longer able to perform any concerts in America without someone in the audience crying out 'C sharp minor!' at the end. The thundering chords of the final part of this work are legendary and at the same time not asunplayable as one might have been led to believe.
