Extensive preface included in Polish, German, and English. The titular term 'juvenilia' denotes student works - the exercises in composition written during the first three years of studies with Heinrich Urban, from the autumn of 1895 to the spring 1898. Only the first of the compositions included in this volume - the character piece Chant de mai for piano - represents the earlier works composed during the Warsaw years. The piano miniature is the oldest extant work by Karlowicz.

Mozart’s final three symphonies were composed, according to Mozart’s autograph Verzeichnüß, in the space of a few weeks, from late June to early August 1788. During that year the 11-year-old Hummel was a resident pupil of Mozart and would have been a daily witness to the creation of these foundational works of the Western musical canon. There is an almost total lack of documentary evidence concerning the circumstances of these works, however, which has led to considerable speculation as to their origins, early performances and reception. There are three plausible scenarios for the genesis of these symphonies: that they were written for a series of subscription concerts scheduled for autumn 1788; that Mozart wrote them with the (unfulfilled) intention of publication as an opus; that they may have been prepared in advance of Mozart’s projected visit to London with his British friends the Storace family, Thomas Attwood and Michael Kelly (again unfulfilled). A contemporaray review in The Harmonicum (1823) of Hummel’s piano arrangements of these works notes, approvingly, that they show his perfect knowledge of the instrument and his nice [= fastidious] discrimination in selecting the most effective parts from the score in those places where the whole could not be taken.

Chopin composed his ''Mazurkas'' continuously from 1825 to 1849. The half-utilitarian genre was a point of departure, gradually becoming a form of meditative lyricism - the most personal statement of expression. Chopin's''Mazurkas'' present a number of specific performance problems resulting from such causes as the diversity of individual mazurkas, their collection in opus groups byChopin and his drawing inspiration from dance forms of Polishfolk music. Volume No. 4 contains 43 mazurkas. Of the variants in musical notation, those designated ''ossia'' were marked in this way by Chopin himself or inscribed in his hand in pupils' copies, while those without thisindication result from textual divergences in authentic copies or from difficulties in reading the text in an unambiguous way. The miniature version of the National Edition does not contain source commentary or performance notes.
