Music for two pianos is among the most satisfying of collaborative genres, and Rhian Samuel has caught its spirit of verve and playfulness in her new Serenade Duo. Repartee between the pianists drives this effervescent score from mysterious beginnings, in which the serenade alternates with fleet, toccata-like material, through crosstalk growing ever more boisterous until the serenade itself is heard in a singing statement 'molto rubato'. An up-tempo conclusion in a flurry of scales returns enigmatically to the mood of the opening. Serenade Duo is of just over five minutes' duration, and was premiered by Dimitris Barydis and Petros Moschos on 13 February 2005 at the Purcell Room.

Ständchen [Serenade] was one of the most famous Lieder composed by Franz Schubert. Based on a poem by the German poet Ludwig Rellstab, this declaration of passionate love in the form of a serenade inspired a large number of transcriptions and adaptations. Among the most remarkable is that by Franz Liszt who, in Ständchen, explores all the lyrical expressiveness of the piano. The musical text includes a simplified version notated below the original one by Franz Liszt.

After a long recovery from an accident, composer Hodkinson was asked for piano duet music for two colleagues at Stetson University. Eager to return to composing, Hodkinson produced this serenade, Brain Drops, with each of seven movements dedicated to the doctors and therapists who saw him through his ordeal. The serenade is frequently defined as instrumental 'evening music' characterized by a mixture of elements, he says. Schubert's St�ndchen (Serenade) on Rellstab's poem �Leise flehen meine Lieder� (Gently My Songs Entreat) not only numbers among the most well-known art songs, but is still a real hit today in Liszt's arrangement for piano solo. Initially published in 1838 in a version without ossias, the arrangement began its triumph on the piano by 1840 at the latest � probably not least thanks to Liszt's obliging addition of easier variants � as numerous editions published throughout Europe during the composer's lifetime testify. Liszt himself liked to play the St�ndchen as an encore and even wrote small cadenzas for it, which are of course taken into account in the new Henle Urtext edition. English and French translations of the German poem as well as the placement of the song text above the music round off the edition, for which Evgeny Kissin provided the fingerings.
