String Quartet No. 9 is the fourth that Wernick has written for the Juilliard Quartet. A commission by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Wernick's ninth string quartet was premiered by the Juilliard in November, 2015 and subsequently taken on tour. The first movement's affect (marked 'Assertive, Aggressive') [compares] to Rockport's forbidding coastline in the eyes of the first. settlers. This was an apt analogy since the work's musical language is, in today's vernacular, 'gnarly.' [The second movement]...a 'never-ending throb of repeated notes'...the effect of steadily diminishing life-force, though with a 'final burst of hope from the solo cello.' Ferdinand Kuchler is regarded as one of the great violin teachers of the 20th century, not least because of his violin method. His Concertino in G major Op. 11 still is a popular entry-level piece of concert literature even in today's violin lessons.Apart from the edition in the original instrumentation for violin and piano (SE 1001), this arrangement follows the title 'Concertino' and allows for early playing with string accompaniment - with string quartet and double-bass ad libitum or scored for multiple parts with string orchestra. Scored For String Quartet. Commissioned by the New Arts String Quartet, first performed in Tokyo November 1996. Quoting Tanaka: The title Metal Strings suggests speed metal rock music which I have been listening to a lot in recent years. I find an explosive energy in its music that people of today thirst for. Previously I have explored solid, speedy and metallic sound in pieces such as 'Wave Mechanics' (1994), 'Wave Mechanics II' (1994) and 'Metalic Crystal' (1994-95). This idea has been extended and developed in my string quartet, Metal Strings. Score only edition, separate parts are also available on sale.
