Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise therefore that his compositions for wind instruments are at the forefront of the repertoire  Morceau Symphonique for Tenor Trombone being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra Gaubert was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed including his Morceau Symphonique for Tenor Trombone and Piano. Addressing many technicalfeatures including flourishing semiquaver passages a wide range lyrical melodies unusual intervals chromaticism and complex rhythms  Morceau Symphonique is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring advanced Tenor Trombone players.

Bozza (1905-1991) was a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire winning prizes for the Violin conducting and composing as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He predominantly composed chamber music for wind but his solo works for the instruments are also held in high esteem such as his Ballade for Trombone and Piano. This Bozza piece was originally composed for conservatoire students displaying the technical skills as well as musicality of the soloist. There is no formal structure to Ballade however the many changes in tempo provide variety throughout. With no distinct musical theme unifying the music it is interesting to note that much of the material of Bozza's Ballade is extracted from orchestral excerpts. Ballade is an ideal performance piece for advanced trombonists.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Hommage A Bach for Trombone and Piano is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1957 Bozza's Hommage A Bach reflects thecomposer's admiration of the great J. S. Bach. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'
