Following the huge success of their instrumental method Look, Listen and Learn, Michiel Oldenkamp and Jaap Kastelein have focussed their attention on school bands and devised a completely new method that can be used in both instrumental lessons and class bands or wind ensembles.
Learning Music Together is the new method for young wind players and percussionists, aged eight and above.
Learning Music Together has been developed in close collaboration with professionals from the class band world, music schools, and academies in the Netherlands and Germany.
Learning Music Together combines instrumental lessons with a course for class band. The tuba lessons offer tuba -specific items such as new notes and technical exercises while at the same time supporting the learning of the class band, with a focus on rhythm, melodic structure and playing music together. The method consists of two volumes. Volume One introduces the first instrumental notes in unison and then develops part-playing with duets. Volume Two builds on the skills taught in the first volume and introduces pieces in three parts. In addition, supplementary material is available on the extensive website, e.g. demo- and accompaniment tracks for all pieces, additional pieces of music (well-known songs) and video tutorials. Learning Music Together is logically structured and illustrated in a child-friendly way - a perfect combination for young musicians!

In the jazz tradition the Tuba was the bass in the rhythm section up until the mid-twenties. It was then the upright bass replaced the Tuba in many ensembles as the jazz music moved north and continued to develop. After this period the Tuba's roll, as bass in the rhythm section, was at a standstill and did not develop through Swing and Bebop. It wasn't until Cool Jazz of the 1950's when the Tuba was used by Miles Davis and Gil Evans in 'Birth of the Cool' as an ensemble horn. The Tuba, like swimming, is something you can't do any longer than you can hold your breath. In order to maintain a steady beat while playing in the rhythm section I have developed a system of breathing called Pant Breathing. Using this method, the player can maintain a steady beat within the rhythm section, without losing time while taking deep breaths.

Petri Keskitalo’s playful The Tunnel at the End of the Light is a commission by the Lieksa Brass Festival for its International Tuba Competition in 2023. The work employs quirky rhythms and changing meters, while exploring the upper and lower register of the tuba. Lyrical passages quickly change into driving rhythmic patterns, as if a hysterical tuba-player were hitting the walls of a tunnel. The tunnel that starts where the light ends. “French composer, conductor and teacher, Jules Semler-Collery (1902-1988) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. He became well-known as a composer and his works remain popular to this day, including his Barcarolle and Bacchanalian Songs for Tuba, Double Bass, Bass Saxhorn or Brass Trombone and Piano. Semler-Collery's success as a composer has been proven by the inclusion of many of his compositions in the list of compulsory works at the Paris Conservatoire. The two movements of Barcarolle and Bacchanalian Song, adaptable for a variety of bass instruments, reflect their titles by use of a variety of musical features. Suitable for advanced Tuba, Double Bass, Bass Saxhorn and Bass Trombone players, Semler-Collery's Barcarolle and Bacchanalian Song is an exciting addition to the bass instrument's repertoire.â€.

Composed by Roger Boutry, Tubaroqueis a melodious piece of baroque music for Tuba, Bb Bass Saxhorn or Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment. Quite difficult, it would be perfect for advanced players and would work well in a concert. Starting with a small introduction in three measures, the first part of the piece begins on a Slow Waltz movement which consists of a main theme with two variations, including one played an octave lower. The second part Allegretto is more lyrical and the last one Moderato/Allegro, starts like a march to then go back to a more melodious finale. Roger Boutry is a French musician and contemporary composer who received eight First Prizes at the Conservatoire, including composition, conducting and Piano. He also won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954 and some prizes by the SACEM and by the city of Paris. He also got involved as a professor of Harmony and director of Orchestras..
