This late work in the composer's exquisite, occasionally austere sonority with the movements Intrada, Adagietto, Scherzo and Finale (Praludium and Fughetta) last approximately 15 minutes. A fascinating challenge for ambitious ensembles.

The episode from Ovid'sMetamorphosesin which Daphne attempts to escape Apollo's advances by turning into a laurel tree, causing the devastated god to weave a laurel crown in memory of the nymph, has inspired the masterworks of many artists. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose famous marble sculpture is housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, is only one example of this. Many composers set this myth to music including young George Frideric Handel with his grand-scale dramatic cantataApollo e Dafne. The composer started working on the work shortly before leaving Italy in 1709, most likely finishing it the following year in Hanover.Barenreiter now presents a vocal score of the opera-like cantata, the highlights of which include Dafne's ariaFelicissima quest'alma(accompanied by solo oboe) and Apollo's famous lamentCara pianta.

As an inexhaustible proponent of Beethoven's life and work, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) produced a number of arrangements and transcriptions in homage to the great composer. His FANTASIE ÃœBER MOTIVEN AUS BEETHOVENS RUINEN VON ATHEN, S. 122 (FANTASY ON BEETHOVEN'S RUINS OF ATHENS) for piano and orchestra is one of three existing versions, all of which he dedicated to Nikolay Rubinstein. The work on which the piece is based, incidental music for a play by August von Kotzebue, was written in 1811 in Pest, Hungary for the dedication of a new theater. The first performance of the FANTASY took place, also in Pest, on June 1, 1853. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2-3) Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Pno in Score. Reprint edition.

More than usual, in this chorale cantata the hymn is continuously present; it appears as the cantus firmus in four of the six movements and gives the work an overall unity. In addition to the opening chorus and in the closing chorale, it appears in a trio, a rare occurrence in Bach's vocal works, and even in a recitative. The latter is performed by recorders. The rich scoring for winds - besides the recorders it also includes three oboes - characterizes this cantata, which is performed after Christmas and whose text refers back to Christmas and also points to the new year. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3112200.
