The Variations were the only solo piano piece published in Webern's lifetime and the last Webern piece published by UE while he was alive. While musicologists wax poetic about Webern's 12-tone technique and whether the title Variations is appropriate, we will praise Manoukian for a successful transcription of the work for solo guitar. With fingerings and notations, his score brings Webern's landmark work to an entirely new group of musicians.

From Webern’s early period (pre-opus one), this tone poem is inspired by a poem by the German novelist-philosopher Bruno Willle (1860-1928), famous as a liberal and progressive thinker. Written in 1904 and first performed in 1962 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy, the piece is an impressionistic description of a summer day in the woods and fields. This full score is freshly engraved and corrected using the MOLA (Major Orchestra Librarian’s Association) circulated list of discrepancies and corrections. Orchestral parts are available for rental.

Duddell's short string quartet made up of four mere bagatelles is a treat for both players and audiences. First performed by the Psophos Quartet at the 2007 Presteigne Festival and recently transcribed for string orchestra, Duddell embraces the historical weight of the prestigious string quartet medium by alluding to a wealth of masterpieces by Mozart, Stravinsky, Debussy, Beethoven, Tippett and Webern. Despite these acknowledged references, the music is still distinctly Duddell's, with catchy melodic lines, tender harmonies and rhythmic energy. This is a fantastic new work for young quartets interested in new repertoire.
