Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's Green for 4 Voices (SATB). Programme note: New Ground – No Ground – Green In 1986 I wrote Ground for the Kronos Quartet. I used the principle of the baroque ground and created a series of chords – going up and going down symmetrically. The material formed the basis for the quartet. In my next collaboration with Kronos I wrote the darker Last Ground – at the time supposed to be my last composition of the kind. After some years this seemed a bit pathetic and I decided to write a new – lighter ground – New Ground. To disappoint mylisteners as much as possible I based this piece on a very old and very well-known ground: Pachelbel’s Canon.  The piece is tonal and that suggested another –atonal – composition – No Ground (based on another string quartet – no. 7 Parted from 1984 first performed by Kronos). I am very fond of the elaborated constructivism of the medieval or early renaissance music so in my view the two new quartets needed to be connected and combined. The two quartets can be performed in combination with the four-part vocal piece Green. The text is from medieval England. The pieces are written for the Kronos Quartet and Theatre of Voices.

Thomas Morley (c.1557-1602) was an Elizabethan composer organist and printer and one of the foremost members of the English musical renaissance. He studied under William Byrd and later became organist at St Pauls Cathedral. He almost certainly knew and was associated with William Shakespeare and is one of the few contemporary composers whose settings of Shakespeare’s verse have survived. He is best remembered for his madrigals such as Now Is The Month Of Maying but he also wrote many sacred works undoubtedly for use at St Paul’s.Nolo Mortem Peccatoris is a Latin motet for SATB choir. A Piano reduction is provided foraccompaniment if required.

Morten Lauridsen is most noted for his vocal cycles and sacred motets which are performed extensively throughout the world. He is Professor of Composition at the USC Thornton School of Music in the United States. The Madrigali: Six ‘Fire Songs’ on Italian Renaissance poems were premiered in Los Angeles in 1988. Each of the six poems in the cycle contains romantic references to fire and the music is unified by manipulations of a sonority called the ‘Fire-Chord’ which opens the piece and is found extensively throughout. Whilst the pieces are contained in a cycle each piece could be performedindividually. Translations of the poems are provided. He studied under ThomasTallis at the Chapel Royal before becoming organist and master of the Choristers at Lincoln. He later returned to the Chapel Royal as Gentleman and Organist. Ave Verum (?Hail True Body?) is a hymn to theBlessed Sacrament for SATB choir. This edition is printed with the original Latin text and a keyboard reduction for rehearsal or accompaniment. Ideal as a short anthem for a choir of any size.

O Quam Suavis was inspired by the antiphon tothe Magnificat at the 1st Vespers of Corpus Christi. It makes a perfect anthem for any Eucharist service or Mass. It is scored for SATB choir with Piano reduction for rehearsal purposes.

An unusual setting of the Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis by Tarik O'Regan written for a double chorus with Cello or Soprano Saxophone. The works were commissioned separately by Timothy Brown for the Choir of Clare College Cambridge. The Magnificat was premièred at the 2000 Spitalfields Winter Festival while the Nunc Dimittis was composed for a BBC broadcast in 2001.
