All of Bach’s six authenticated motets were written between 1723 and 1727 for St Thomas’ Church Leipzig where Bach was appointed as director of music in 1723. During this period Bach composed most of his cantatas and it seems likely that for ordinary Sunday services he used existing motets from the seventeenth century tradition reserving his own motet compositions for special occasions. Four of his six motets were written for the funeral services of prominent members of the St Thomas’ congregation. Jesu Meine Freude (BWV 227) the longest most musically complex and earliest of the six was written in1723 for the funeral of Johanna Maria Käsin the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster. Bach newly interpreted - the vocal band Slixs edited a songbook for mixed vocal ensemble or small choral ensemble containing unusual arrangements of instrumental works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The arrangements range between classical interpretation and flirting with jazz. They demand from the singers a profound basic education in music and flexible alternation between the voices. Heinz Werner Zimmermann (born 11 August 1930 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is a German composer. Zimmermann had his first composition instruction from 1946 to 1948 with Julius Weismann and studied from 1950 to 1954 in Heidelberg with Wolfgang Fortner as well as at the Kirchenmusikalisches Institut Heidelberg (Institute for Church Music) there. After passing his examinations at the Freiburg Conservatory under Harald Genzmer he became Fortner’s successorin Heidelberg. Here he maintained close contacts with the musicologist Thrasyboulos Georgiades whose rhythm and language studies influenced him the most along with his occupation with American spirituals and jazz. From 1963 to 1976 Heinz Werner Zimmermann was director of the Spandauer Kirchenmusikschule (Spandau school of church-music) in Spandau and then from 1975 to 1996 as successor to Kurt Hessenberg as composition teacher at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (Brusniak 2001). Zimmermann’s best-known works are his sacred motets with plucked Double Bass his Organ psalms and his 'Prosalieder'. Among his chief works are his Missa profana the sacred oratorio The Bible of Spirituals as well as his Symphonia sacra. Amongst other honors Zimmermann has been awarded the Music Prizes of the cities of Stuttgart and Berlin a Villa Massimo Stipend in 1965/66 and received in 1982 the Johann Sebastian Bach Prize. The American Wittenberg University in Springfield bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate Zimmermann wrote three American theses including one at the Stanford University in California. Balancing The Books was commissioned by the swingle singers for the Bach 250th anniversary celebrations. The work uses material from the C sharp Major Preludes from Bach's two books of the 48 Preludes and Fugues. This forms part of a series of new works by leading European composers. There are no words the singers use their own syllables. Scored for SSAATTBB.

Four Carols for Dark Times-The set of ?Four Carols for Dark Times? was written between 2003 5 and commissioned at the rate of one piece per year for the Birmingham Bach Choir to perform at their Christmas concerts. The third carol entitled Carol was inserted later to provide a ?scherzo? movement to provide balance to the set.The poems are all by that extraordinary Welsh priest-poet R S Thomas (1913 2000) whose poetry speaks to the composer ?with a directness unmatched by any other 20th century poet?. Thomas?s writing is rich with the imagery of human frailty in relation to religion. The final poem Festival is as good an example as any of his approach: the trappings of Christmas gold holly mistletoe are used to contrast the cheapness of our self-centred celebration with the commitment required to nurture real faith. Beautifully constructed with intricate but accessible harmony and varied textures and moods this intriguing set of carols will bring an original and thought-provoking perspective to Christmas concerts and services.
