Music for a Leipzigcoffee houseand for other venues - Johann Sebastian Bach composed not only for the nobility and the church, but also for bourgeois musical culture. Among these works are the harpsichord concertos. They are noted down in a manuscript that is a unique and probably the most important document for the instrumental repertoire of the LeipzigCollegium Musicum.Bach arranged his concerto movements in such a way that the harpsichord is given a solo part that exploits the instrument'sclavieristicpossibilities to the full. These works thus fix a decisive moment in the early history of the piano concerto genre which received significant impulses from Bach and his circle of students. The autograph offers revealing insights into the composer's working methods, elucidated by Christoph Wolff in an accompanying essay. Martina Rebmann describes the genesis of the Bach collection at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, which holds the autograph. The facsimile in high-quality four-colour printing reproduces the extensive score in its original size; BWV and bar numbers on every page facilitate its use.

Bach's harpsichord concerti, extremely popular among pianists, are presumably reworkings of pieces originally written for the violin. Bach, however, succeeded in transferring the diverse idiosyncrasies of violin technique to the keyboard with such ingenuity that most of today's pianists also include these concerti in their standard repertoire. The first concerto in D minor is perhaps the most popular - not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. Now, as a prelude to a series of all of Bach's harpsichord concerti, G. Henle Publishers presents a piano reduction and study edition (score) of the D-minor concerto. None other than András Schiff, the outstanding Bach expert, has provided fingering suggestions.

Step by step, Breig reconstructs the entire introductory movement.
ISBN 9790004173428. 7.5 x 10.5 inches.
BWV 188 reconstructed in its entirety for the first time The project of publishing Bach's cantatas in a material that can be purchased completely continues to grow with a new edition of a work that made particular demands on the editor. For Breitkopf, the renowned Bach scholar Werner Breig had already brought out new editions of the well-known B-minor Suite (PB/OB 5397, EB 8737) and of the A-minor Suite on which it was based, but now reconstructed for violin, strings and basso continuo (PB/OB 5398). His interest was particularly sparked by the sinfonia, which has been transmitted in an extremely rudimentary fashion. Step by step, Breig reconstructs the entire introductory movement from the final virtuoso organ passage and the da capo indication with corresponding musical incipit. His model for the reconstruction, which was carried out with enormous stylistic authenticity, is an early D-minor violin concerto which is no longer extant in this form, but which Bach later reworked into the Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1052. Performers will enjoy a Bach cantata that is now restored in its entirety for the first time.Step by step, Breig reconstructs the entire introductory movement.

The present work originated in Leipzig between 1730 and 1733. It is Johann Sebastian Bach's best-known harpsichord concerto and, from a technical point of view, may be considered as his most typical harpsichord concerto.
