Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80 (Carus 31.080/00) is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most frequently-performed cantatas. But the well-known form of the work, with its great opening chorale chorus, represents the final stage of a multi-layered version history, beginning with the cantata Alles, was von Gott geboren BWV 80a, probably composed for Oculi Sunday (the third Sunday in Lent) 1716. As no cantatas were performed during Passiontide in Leipzig, if Bach wanted to re-use the cantata he had to rewrite it for another Sunday or feast day. Reformation Day suggests itself, as Bach had also incorporated the hymn Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott into the Oculi cantata (as an instrumental cantus firmus in the opening movement and in the final chorale). The first version of the Reformation cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80b (Carus 31.080/50) was simply expanded by the addition of chorale movements, then the movements of the Oculi cantata, slightly altered, were included in the cantata in the form known today as BWV 80.Only the text of the Oculi cantata Alles, was von Gott geboren BWV 80a survives today. However, the early version of the cantata can easily be extrapolated from the two later versions. This first published reconstruction to date, by the renowned Bach scholar Klaus Hofmann, represents a welcome addition to the small repertoire of Bach cantatas for Passion Sundays.

The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Score available separately - see item CA.3118600.

Bach's Motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing unto the Lord a new song) BWV 225 was first performed in 1727 and the text is based on Psalms 149 and 150. It is written for eight voices of two four-part choirs. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work of three movements is about 13 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. Mr Sauer suggests, Since a complete performance of this Motet is about thirteen minutes in length, any of the three movements may be performed separately. The top voices in each choir have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3114900.
