The earliest works, like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036, date back to the years of study with his father, yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work, the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71-74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq 143-145 for violin and harpsichord, most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E. Written in 1747 while C P E Bach was in Berlin probably for his then employer Frederick the Great or for Frederick's teacher J J Quantz this work was not printed until 1763. Like his father J S Bach C P E Bach chose the key of A minor for his only compositon for solo Flute but it's structure is quite different to that of Bach senior. Like J. S. Bach's Partita in A minor (BWV 1013) the sonata edited here is considered one of the most important works for solo Flute of the eighteenth century. In contrast to J. S. Bach's composition which still represents the traditional polyphonic and figurative style the work of the youngBach displays great sensitivity and occasionally an almost romantic expressiveness. This new edition of C. P. E. Bach's Sonata in A minor is based on a copy in the anthology 'Musikalisches Mancherley'; the editor owes his thanks to the Zurrich Central Library.

Josef Rheinberger (b. 1839 d. 1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field but he found in the Organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an Organ composer has grown and is now firmly established whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and his numerous shorter pieces (about a hundred) make up one of the most important contributions to the Organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintenance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale his position as an Organ composer issecond only to that of Bach. Sonata No. 19:The G minor Sonata is one of a small proportion of the twenty - No. 15 in D is another - concerning whose merits players are divided. It does not meet one half-way. It is the longest of the twenty: some monotony inevitably results from the use of the key of G for all its movements : its difficulties are of the ungrateful type : and the vigour of its first movement is often rough-even harsh. Yet it appears to be among the favourites of those who know it well; the late Dr. G. J. Bennett (a pupil of Rheinberger's and a devotee of the Sonatas) placed it among the best of the later numbers. Sonata No. 20:In spite of some inequalities No. 20 makes a worthy end to a fine series. Rheinberger's failing health at the time of its composition is no doubt responsible for a few moments of indecision especially in the Finale. The invention shows little if any falling off. In all the sonatas there are few better themes of the broad diatonic type than that which opens the first movement ; and the pleasant tunes of the Intermezzo and Pastoral and the swinging subject of the Finale are in the true Rheinberger vein. But the lack of a substantial fugal section is felt: it might well have come as a central portion of the Finale which

While many electric bassists study the Bach cello suites at some point, fewer attempt the sonatas and partitas for un- accompanied violin (BWV 1001-1006). Composed around 1720, the sonatas and partitas display rich polyphonic writing, unlike the simpler monophonic cello suites. This collection features a challenging but rewarding transcription of the complete A minor Violin Sonata (BWV 1002), which fits particularly well on the bass. Also included are the well-known gavotte en rondeau from the E major violin partita (BWV1006) and the complete A minor partita for solo flute (BWV 1013), transposed here to D minor. Finally, an arrangement of the familiar chorale Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (from BWV 147) takes advantage of the bass's natural and artificial harmonics. Performance notes are included. The harpsichordist, conductor and organist Gustav Leonhardt was considered a pioneer of historical performance practice. Between 1968 and 1978 he made harpsichord transcriptions of several of Bach?s compositions for unaccompanied violin or violoncello. Now these transcriptions are being made available to us by his pupil, the famed harpsichordist Siebe Henstra, based on the handwritten notes that Leonhardt used for his own performances.
