Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto written for his friend Joseph Joachim has remained a standard in the concert literature since its first performance. No scholarly critical edition of this work has ever been published and therefore the many sometimes conflicting sources have never been evaluated for a critical performing edition. Not only Brahms' autograph score solo part and autograph Piano reduction but also his personal copies of the first edition score as well as the first edition orchestral parts have all been consulted. Clive Brown?s edition offers insights into the genesis of the composition and the working relationshipbetween Brahms and Joachim. The critical commentary comments on all discrepancies in the sources. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The 'Deutsche Volkslieder” WoO by Johannes Brahms were published in altogether seven books in 1894. The first six books each comprised seven songs for voice and piano accompaniment, and Book VII contained the subsequently composed songs nos. 43 to 49 for four-part chorus and piano ad libitum. Brahms had completed his compilation of the books in the winter of 1893/94- however, most of the songs were written earlier. Brahms' primary text source was the two-volume collection of 'Deutsche Volkslieder mit ihren Original-Weisen” (German Folksongs with their Original Melodies) published in 1838/1840 by Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio./ Répertoire / Voix Haute et Piano

Entre 1859 et 1885 avec ses quatre symphonies ses deux concertos pour piano un concerto pour violon des danses des variations et des ouvertures Brahms était devenu le représentant incontournable de la grande musique orchestrale. En 1887 il choisit d?écrire son double concerto en la mineur op. 102 pour le violon et le violoncelle car il disposait pour ces instruments de solistes de premier plan: après la création de la deuxième sonate pour violoncelle de Brahms le violoncelliste Robert Hausmann lui avait demandé une pièce de concert quant au fameux violoniste Joseph Joachim il entretenait avec Brahms des liens d?amitié et avait notamment créé son concerto pourviolon. Après la tonalité sombre de la quatrième symphonie ce concerto apparaît comme particulièrement optimiste et réconciliateur. Également paru dans le cadre de la nouvelle édition complète des ?uvres de Brahms il est proposé ici sous la forme très maniable de partition d?étude.

Johannes Brahms?s organ works in a sense ?frame? his whole oeuvre. He wrote several preludes and fugues and the chorale prelude ?O Traurigkeit o Herzeleid? in the mid-1850s at a time when he was making an intensive study ofcounterpoint. The Eleven Chorale Preludes op. 122 on the other hand are Brahms?s final work composed in 1896 immediately before and after the death of Clara Schumann. This revised Henle Urtext edition presents all of Brahms?sorgan works in a single volume following the musical text of the New Brahms Complete Edition and with a preface and a commentary that reflect the latest scholarship. The early versions of two of these pieces are also given in anappendix.

Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. This new edition of Johannes Brahms?s Schicksalslied, op. 54 for mixed choir and orchestra is a modern Urtext edition of the score based on current editorial principles. It is based not only on the composer?s personal copy of the first edition as the primary source, but also on the engraving manuscript which was long thought to have been lost. Thus the composer?s handwritten corrections made in this manuscript could be incorporated in the new edition, as well as a revision in this bilingual edition of the English translation of Friedrich Hölderlin?s dramatic poem. L?histoire de la genèse de la 4e Symphonie remonte probablement aux années 1870, alors que Brahms travaillait sur la cantate de Bach «Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich», dont le thème de la chaconne préfigure la cellule du final.

Autour du 29 août 1885, Brahms écrivit à Hans von Bülow depuis Mürzzuschlag dans le Steiermark: «J?ai là quelques entr?actes ? ce que l?on a coutume de réunir sous le nom de symphonie. [?] Je crains [?] qu?elle a le goût du climat local ? ici les cerises ne mûrissent pas.» Aucune trace de cerises «amères» dans cette symphonie. L?oeuvre est aujourd?hui un des sommets de la symphonie classique-romantique.

Op. 89. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The Three Fates, or Parcae, were the goddesses of fate in Greek-Roman mythology, and sang on themes of curse and fate. The Parzenlied in Goethe?s verse drama ?Iphigenie auf Tauris? is concerned with these themes and became the model for Johannes Brahms?s setting. La Ballade écossaise «Edward», tirée du recueil de chants populaires «Stimmen der Völker in Liedern» de J. G. Herder (Voix des peuples), impressionna à tel point Brahms que, comme il le dit à un ami, les mélodies s?arrangèrent d?elles-mêmes en lui. «Edward» fournit le motif de la première des quatre ballades, contes musicaux de nature romantique et dramatique, liés pour Brahms à des souvenirs communs avec Clara Schumann. Pour Julius Grimm, à qui les pièces sont dédiées, «c?est à elle qu?appartiennent en fait les ballades». Robert Schumann quant à lui s?exprima avec enthousiasme sur l??uvre de son jeune collègue. Brahms' only Violin concerto was given a very warm reception by his contemporaries and has been an important piece in the Violin repertoire ever since. It bears witness to Brahms' fruitful collaboration with Joseph Joachim whocontributed a cadenza. The composer's original and extremely demanding piano reduction has been carefully simplified for our edition by Johannes Umbreit. This Urtext edition follows the musical text of the new Brahms CompleteEdition. The appendix also contains an alternative version of Joachim's cadenza that to date has not been published in a practical edition. Alongside Joachim's original fingerings and bowings there are also fingering suggestionsby Frank Peter Zimmermann.

Urtextausgabe-In his Serenade no. 2 op. 16 composed in 1858 60 Johannes Brahms keeps to the usual smaller scoring for this genre using pairs of winds and horns as well as low strings (no violins!).?His friendClara Schumann was ?delighted? with the work but the public reaction was restrained and even Brahms himself was not happy with some details. Thus 15 years after the first performance he rigorously revised theserenade.?Henle are now publishing this definitive version from 1875 that was ?new revised by the author? as a study score with the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition.
