This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. Even today, concert life is hard to imagine without the Introduction et Rondo capriccioso. The highly virtuosic work already inspired critics and audiences during the composer's lifetime; reported about the premiere in 1867 was: The Introduction and the Rondo capriccioso for the same instrument are both original and charming, and Maestro Sarasate, who was in his element here, admirably made the most of it. And a few years later, a music critic described the work as a kind of fantasy waltz in the Spanish style and with a most bewitching effect. After the first performances in 1867, despite success, the work's score and orchestral parts had little chance of publication due to concert companies' reluctance. In 1869 the Paris publishing house G. Hartmann merely published an arrangement for violin and piano produced by the composer's friend Georges Bizet. The orchestral score and parts were first published after the Paris publishing house Durand had acquired publication rights in 1875. The present edition published in collaboration with the G. Henle Verlag is the first critical edition of the work.

Written by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) in 1869, the Piano Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 29 follows the standard concerto form while experimenting with harmony. Premiered on November 27th, 1869, by Saint-Saëns himself at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the work was not particularly well received at the time. Today, while not as popular as Saint-Saëns' second, fourth, or fifth concertos, the third, with its balance between delicate lyricism and virtuosity, remains an important addition to the piano concerto repertoire. Tantum ergo Sacramentum (Therefore so great a Sacrament). Saint Saens wrote two settings of this music, this one being unpublished without an opus number. It is a short liturgical piece he wrote in 1860 while working as a young church organist at L'Eglise da la Madeleine.
The music, originally written for 2 sopranos, alto, organ and optional chorus is very simple in nature with a religious and atmospheric feel to it.
Mr. Couturier has done a wonderful job arranging this 4-minute work for 8-part Brass Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

Following the death of his mother in 1888, a depressed Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) decided to take a trip to his favorite destination, North Africa, travelling to Ceylon, then to Alexandria and Cairo over the period of several months. While he was in Egypt, he composed his fantasia for piano and orchestra, AFRICA, Op. 89. Dedicated to pianist Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos, it premiered on October 25, 1891, with the dedicatee playing the solo, and the work was an immediate success both at the premiere and after, which pleased Saint-Saëns a great deal to the point that he considered AFRICA a signature work. Borrowing themes and techniques from North African music, the fantasy draws on material he heard in Algeria and Egypt, offering an exotic sound to those listening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This concertante is notable also as one of the first works to be recorded with the composer as soloist, with a surviving 1904 recording with Saint-Saëns at the piano.
