Jesu Priceless Treasure is one of very few Bach motets which are in five parts. Of all of Bach's motets it is the longest the most varied and has the greatest emotional range. It is founded on the hymn Jesu Meine Freude by Johannes Franck and the melody which Bach has used as the main feature of this motet is the one set to Franck's hymn by Johann Cruger and appeared first in his Praxis Pietatis Melica. The motet seems to have been written for the funeral of Frau Reese in 1723.This piece for SSATB voices can be sung unaccompanied or with the Piano Accompaniment provided in this edition.

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) referred to his petite messe solennelle as the 'Last mortal sin of my old age'. Written in 1863 for the Countess Louise Pillet-Will and first performed on 14 March 1864 at the consecration of the Countess' private chapel the Mass is one of Rossini's finest achievements and the outstanding work of his 'retirement'. Unlike the works Karol Szymanowski composed during the first two decades of the 20th century his Stabat Mater could only have been written in a country with Slavic culture. Drawing on his musical roots and mother tongue he wrote a transparent score for soloists mixed choir and orchestra. It is all fascinatingly simple. The melodies consist of minor and major seconds and thirds and the pace of most movements is slow; only the second movement has a rhythm and melody that seem to pre-empt Orff’s Carmina Burana. Bethlehem from Boublil and Schönberg’s 1996 musical Martin Guerre is a great addition to any Holiday repertoire this season. The lesser known historical musical from the same creative team that produced Les Miserables and Miss Saigon features similar vocal monumentality as its predecessors. This piece is the best of both worlds combining the grand sound of musical theatre with the festive atmosphere of carolling and will be a welcome change to often overplayed and dusty Christmas programmes.
