A unique view of Llobet, as a champion and arranger of Sor. The Sor studies reproduced in facsimile are from Llobet's own library. In an interview in Barcelona in 1929, which is reproduced in full in this edition, Llobet announced his intention of preparing a new edition of the Sor studies. Judging by the density of his marking and copious added and altered fingering in this facsimile edition, he seemed in fact to be doing just this. Unfortunately, a new edition edited by him never came to fruition! We have prepared our facsimile edition of these later printings of Simrock editions (a gift from Erwin Schwarz-Reiflingen in 1928), carefully restoring the originals to make these pages clearer, so that not only is everything more legible, but most importantly, all of Llobet´s fingerings and amendments are clearly legible. In this volume dedicated to Sor, we have re-engraved for inclusion here all 6 of Llobet's very fine Sor transcriptions from La Guitarra in Argentina, fingered and arranged by Llobet.

It is now close on 50 years since Brian Jeffery gave guitarists what was then considered the first complete edition of the guitar works of Fernando Sor in a facsimile edition, a landmark publication in its time, greatly benefitting the guitar community. The intervening four decades have seen much new research in historical guitar matters, and a re-assessment of many pertinent matters in regard to Sor's music. A significant figure among today's leading researchers is Erik Stenstadvold, a recognised authority on Fernando Sor's music. Guitar Heritage is proud to have him as the editor of this important new critical edition. This 1178-page edition in concert format (305mm x 230mm) in 14 volumes includes new and updated information about Sor and includes some little known and recently discovered works of his.

We proudly present a new critical edition of the collected guitar works by Fernando Sor. Some titles in this edition may be new to some readers, eg the contents of volume 10. This new edition is the biggest new publishing undertaking for the music of Sor since the 1970s. Our editor Erik Stenstadvold is a noted expert on 19th century guitar music and publishes regularly in leading professional journals such as 'Soundboard' and 'Early Music'. His life-long preoccupation with Sor and his music, both as a performer and researcher, has resulted in an unsurpassed edition in terms of scholarly accuracy and practical usefulness. All relevant early sources have been consulted, often several different printed editions and manuscripts of a particular work. In each case the most dependable source has been chosen as copy text, on the basis of historical evidence and textual reliability. Variances and errors in the original scores are corrected and discussed in the comprehensive critical commentaries. All volumes contain detailed introductory notes that place the individual works in their historical context and discuss particular notation problems. Suggestions for the interpretation of ornaments are also provided. In Volume 1 and 2 (Studies), Sor's likely purpose of each individual study is discussed in relation to the technique and fingering principles he describes in his 1830 Méthode. The music scores are produced at 'concert size' with clear and accurate music engraving and high-quality German printing. Original fingering is retained, but in order to make the music more accessible to players in general, editorial fingering has been judiciously added in works with little or no indications in the original editions. Added fingerings are easily distinguishable from the original ones by their different typefaces. The guitar duos come with full-size study scores and separate parts. As an optional extra we offer a 'pocket' size score with all the duos (188 pages, 17 x 24 cms). Each volume has its own thematic index with incipits and the pages include headers to assist navigation. We offer, at a special low price, an optional thematic index volume referenced to the complete edition, which is of practical use (product number GHE 896).

The Spanish guitarist Fernando Sor (1778-1839) undoubtedly is one of the most important composers for the classical guitar. Today, his works are an integral part of the repertoire of every classical guitarist and perfect for guitar lessons. 'Fantaisie' Op. 12 (1821/22) is of the then very popular type 'Theme and variations'. In contrast to most guitar compositions of his time, Sor often used a third or sometimes even fourth part. The polyphonic setting runs through the theme and the seven variations so that the composition is recommendable particularly to somewhat advanced players.

The Trois Pièces de Société, op. 36 was Fernando Sor's second set of society pieces. Published in 1828, these consisted of six short, entertaining pieces grouped into three pairs. They may have been composed for a specific occasion, such as a musical bouquet for a soirée in a Parisian salon, hosted by a certain Monsieur Paston, to whom they are dedicated. For advanced players.

Having previously issued Sor's L'Encouragement for two guitars (PR.UE034491), the New Karl Scheit Edition now tackles another challenging guitar duo, the famous Souvenir de Russie. Composed of an introduction, theme and variations, and an allegretto finale, the Souvenir de Russie is justly a favorite of better guitar duos. For advanced performers.
