Using Chopin's “Prelude in C minor Op. 28 No. 20” as an opening dirge this SATB anthem effectively paints the pained walk to the cross on Golgotha. Offering an optional short intro that still captures the somber andhaunting imagery the women's voices enter with an ethereal straight tone that the men layer upon dramatically. This humbling piece is ideal for Good Friday as the profound theme will linger in worshippers' minds as they leave theservice to contemplate the cross.

Mozart et Haydn ont composé des 'Notturni' pour divers ensembles. Cependant, John Field est considéré comme le créateur du Nocturne pour piano. Chopin le tenait en grande estime et faisait souvent travailler à ses élèves les Nocturnes de ce pianiste et compositeur irlandais au même titre que les siens pour qu'ils se familiarisent avec le 'legato' et qu'ils acquièrent un beau son. Frédéric Chopin compose 21 Nocturnes. L'année de composition de chaque Nocturne ne peut pas toujours être certifiée avec précision mais celle de leur publication est une référence exacte. Trois Nocturnes ont été édités après sa mort. Chopin a l'âme romantique et la musique de ses Nocturnes en exprime les états. L'ambiance crépusculaire est en effet propice aux tendres épanchements, à la mélancolie, aux improvisations poétiques et musicales, comme le dialogue de la Muse et du Poète dans la Nuit de Mai d'Alfred de Musset. Tout en conservant une forme classique (forme Lied A.B.A. généralement), Chopin s'éloigne de la romance et sublimise le Nocturne par son inspiration et son sens pianistique: la mélodie, influencée par le 'bel canto' italien est plus ample et se développe en variations ornementales expressives, souvent chromatiques - l'harmonie est plus raffinée et plus audacieuse par ses dissonances et les dessins d'accompagnement de la basse en forme d'arpèges ou d'accords brisés sont plus ingénieux. Les Nocturnes de Chopin ont beaucoup contribué à sa célébrité et, malgré les difficultés techniques de certains, ils apparaissent comme une bonne introduction à la connaissance et à l'étude de ses autres oeuvres. Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

This volume includes 18 famous piano solos by Chopin, as edited and performed by noted concert pianist, Joseph Banowetz. Included are Nocturnes, Preludes, Mazurkas, a Polonaise and several other works. Banowetz provides a lengthy preface introducing students and performers to all aspects of these works. A full performance CD recording is also included. Joseph Banowetz graduated with a First Prize from the Vienna Akademie fr Musik und darstellende Kunst. Banowetz has been a piano recitalist and orchestral soloist on five continents. He was awarded the Liszt Medal by the Hungarian Liszt Society in recognition of his outstanding performances of Liszt and the Romantic literature.

Par LERDAHL FRED. Waltzes, a cycle of twelve virtuoso waltzes for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, was commissioned by the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, where the first nine waltzes were premiered in 1981. Soon thereafter I composed the final three waltzes. The violinist Rolf Schulte led the first performance of the complete work in New York City in 1983. Waltzes lasts about 22 minutes and is dedicated to the violist Scott Nickrenz, who directed the chamber music series at Spoleto. In arranging the commission, Mr. Nickrenz made three stipulations: make my modernist idiom accessible for summer-festival listening, provide a challenge for brilliant string players accustomed to 19th-century repertory, and give the piece a loud ending. The idea of composing a set of waltzes came from the pleasure I took in playing waltzes by Schubert and Chopin at the piano. Waltzes incorporates occasional references to the music of past composers, but always in ways that fit within my own musical language.
